Warm Up Study for test!!! You have three minutes.

Standard S7L4 Student will examine the dependence of organisms on one another and their environments.

Activity Divide into groups of three. Get out four index cards. If need cards teacher will provide. On the front of each card write the following: Killer Whale, Cod Fish, Algae, and Leopard Seal. One desk arrange cards in a chain to show who eats whom. Answer the following questions through group discussion: 1. What might happen to the organisms if algae were removed from this group? 2. What might happen if the killer whales were removed?

Everything is Connected Two organisms have interacted when one eats the other. Organisms have many interactions. Give an example of an interaction other than “who eats whom”. (hint look in book)

Studying the Web of Life All living things are connected in a web of life. Scientist who study the web of life specialize in the science of ecology. What is the definition for ecology?

The Two Parts of Environment An organism’s environment consists of all things that affect the organism. These things can be divided into two groups: 1. Biotic part of environment 2. Abiotic part of environment What is the difference between the biotic and abiotic part of the environment?

Organization in the Environment The environment can be arranged into different levels: Biosphere Ecosystem Community Population Organism Define the different levels of environment.

Population What is the definition of population? Give an example of a population. The individuals in the population often compete with one another for food, nesting space and mates.

Communities What is the definition for community? What is an example of a community? The populations in a community depend on each other for food, shelter, and many other things.

Ecosystems and Biosphere What is the difference between an ecosystem and a biosphere?

Poster Project Create a poster that shows at least five biotic and five abiotic factors of either an aquatic or a terrestrial ecosystem. This project is due on Monday.
