* Plaque free index: 38% * Recommended OHI: Told and showed patient how to floss (make a “C” shape around each tooth) and how to angle toothbrush (45% angle towards the gums) when brushing * Had patient demonstrate these techniques to me so they were able to perform them at home * I also demonstrated, and had the patient demonstrate, brushing on all of the tooth surfaces

* After showing the patient the intraoral photos on the computer, they were very motivated to brush and floss their teeth. * I sent them home with a new toothbrush and some floss. * The patient also informed me that they eat a lot of sugary foods. I explained to the patient how sugary foods will affect their oral health in a really bad way.

* The patient had a goal of being at least 50% plaque free on their next visit. * They also said they would try and not eat as much sugary foods. * I was really excited because I have never had a patient that seemed this motivated before.

* Plaque free index: 55% * The patient met their goal of being at least 50% plaque free. * They were not motivated enough to cut back on sugary foods. * They also told me that they were not brushing the lingual surfaces of their teeth or flossing!

* I had the patient show me how to brush the lingual sides of their teeth. I adjusted the toothbrush so it was angled correctly. I also demonstrated flossing again and had them demonstrate it as well. * I again discussed how sugary foods will have a negative effect on their oral health. I suggested if they are going to eat sugary foods to at least swish their mouth out with water afterwards.

* What I learned through this process is that motivating a patient is pretty easy when they are in the dental chair. After they leave is another story. * I think what I would do next time is just go over one OHI thing at each appointment. At the next appointment, if the patient has been compliant with the first OHI, then it is time to move on to another. If they haven’t been compliant, then we should go over why it did not work and how we can adjust it to be successful.
