Identify the location of both Egypt and Nubia. 4. Analyze the location of Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. 5. Identify the course of the Nile River through Egypt and Nubia. 6. Explain what is meant by “the gifts of the Nile.” 7. Explain why the Nile River and the desert on either side helped Egypt’s civilization to grow. 8. Summarize how the Nile affected trade and ways of life for Egyptians and Nubians.

3 Starter #1 Turn to a sheet of notebook paper. I’m going to place a phrase on the screen. When I say, “Go,” list as many things as you can that come to mind when you see this phrase. (Wait till I say “Go” before you begin writing.) The phrase is... Ancient Egyptians Go!

5 Starter #3 Today we begin a new unit, Unit 3: Ancient Egypt and Nubia. Before we begin reading, I have a question for you. What do the following terms mean: Downriver Upstream These words refer to the direction the water is flowing. Do rivers flow uphill or downhill? Downhill, because of gravity I have a puzzling question. Turn to the map on page 60. Look at Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt. I would think “Upper Egypt” would be in the north (at the top of the map) and “Lower Egypt” would be south, but it isn’t. It’s just the opposite. Why did they name the southern portion “Upper Egypt”? What does that indicate?
