3 Bell Ringer – Elements Verses Compounds Use the periodic table to sort the following as either elements or compounds: water, sugar, zinc, magnesium, aluminum, table salt, oxygen, carbon dioxide, iron, potassium, krypton ELEMENTS COMPOUNDS

4 Elements Verses Compounds- 9-25
zinc water magnesium sugar aluminum table salt oxygen carbon dioxide iron potassium krypton

5 How do elements, compounds, and mixtures affect your life?
Essential Question How do elements, compounds, and mixtures affect your life?

6 Differentiate between elements, compounds, and mixtures.
Objective Differentiate between elements, compounds, and mixtures.

7 Standard 7-5.2 Classify matter as an element, compound, or mixture based on its composition.

8 2. Elements are composed of one kind of atom.
1. Elements are pure substances that cannot be changed into simple substances. 2. Elements are composed of one kind of atom.

9 Compounds 3. Compounds are pure substances that are composed of two or more types of elements that are chemically combined. 4. Compounds can only be changed into simpler substances called elements by chemical changes 5. One way that two or more atoms can combine is to form a molecule.

10 Common Compounds Water Table Salt

11 7-5.2 Mixtures

12 Mixtures 1. Mixtures are composed of two or more different substances that keep their own individual properties and are combined physically (mixed together). 2. Mixtures can be separated by physical means (filtration, sifting, or evaporation).

13 Sketch to Learn: 3. Filtration-the process of separating materials

14 Sketch to Learn: 4. Sifting-the separation of smaller particles from larger particles

15 Sketch to Learn: 5. Evaporation-the change of state from a liquid to a gas

16 6. Mixtures may be heterogeneous or homogeneous.
2 Main Types of Mixtures 6. Mixtures may be heterogeneous or homogeneous.

17 Heterogeneous Mixtures
7. In a heterogeneous mixture, which is not the same throughout, the parts of the substances can be visibly seen. Fruit Salad Trail Mix

18 Homogeneous Mixtures 8. In a homogeneous mixture, the mixture looks the same throughout. 9. The substances are evenly mixed and you cannot see a difference in the parts of the mixture. 10. The particles of the substances are so small that they cannot be easily seen. Another name for a homogeneous mixture is a solution. Saltwater Milk

19 Grocery Shopping for Mixtures
Analyze the grocery item that is at the edge of your table with your group. Be ready to identify the item as a heterogeneous or homogeneous mixture. Time Frame: 10 seconds
