Mid-Del Schools Taking Learning to the Next Level Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012Leadership Retreat A.M.1

Teaching & Learning Focus for 2011- 2012 Begin Implementation of Common Core State Standards (CCSS) Build on Current Success on PASS Assessments & Move to CCSS Increase Enrollment and Success Rate in Advanced Placement Writing, Writing, Writing – The RIGHT kind of WRITING at all levels! Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 2

4 Teaching & Learning Focus: Common Core Common Core State Standards (CCSS) will replace PASS with full implementation in 2014-2015. We have 3 years to work the Common Core Standards into our classroom teaching and assessments before we go “live” with full implementation across the state. Assessment of the PASS skills will continue to be our accountability system as we begin to teach DEEPER into the Common Core and HIGHER on the pyramid of Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 5 Teaching & Learning Focus: Assessments New to Common Core Assessments: Assessments in Grades K-12 Embedded Technology Tasks Multiple Assessments - More Than One Snapshot a Year Like PASS, some questions will be answered through multiple guess. Unlike PASS, students will be expected to respond in writing - developing an informed opinion, explaining and defending their answers. The CCSS Assessments are said to “look” a lot like Advanced Placement exams.

Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 6 Teaching & Learning Focus: Advanced Placement The assessments expected with the Common Core are similar to the Advanced Placement tests. One transition strategy is to get more kids enrolled in AP and Pre-AP classes and more kids taking AP tests. Another transition strategy is to provide multiple opportunities for teachers to receive training in Advanced Placement strategies from College Board.

Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 7 Teaching & Learning Focus: Writing Some Common Core assessment items will require students to compose written responses using Technology to organize, research, and publish work. Types of Writing in CCSS Assessments: Writing - Argumentative Writing - Informative Writing - Narrative Aligned with the NAEP Writing Framework http://www.nagb.org/publications/frameworks/writing-2011.pdf

Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 8 Teaching & Learning Focus: The BIG Question In all we do in Mid-Del, the questions will be: “Is it good for kids?” “How does this lead to success in the Common Core?” Transportation … Stage … Nutrition … Instructional Materials … Professional Development

The Promise of the Common Core State Standards “These Standards are not intended to be new names for old ways of doing business. They are a call to take the next step. It is time to recognize that standards are not just promises to our children, but promises to keep.” Chief State School Officers Mid-Del Teaching & Learning Team, 2011-2012 11
