2 Biggest Fear of slave owners was a slavery revolt

3 Slave Laws Stricter slave codes were passed between 1830 and 1860 Page 410 – identify the new restrictions on slaves and reasons for the codes

4 Slave laws Article Four of the United States Constitution, Section 2, Clause 3 Fugitive Slave Act 1850 – Part of the Compromise of 1850 – Page 453 in American Journey

5 Resistance- Underground Railroad Loosely organized system of secret routes to help slaves escape – Goal was to get to free states in North and Canada Led by white abolitionists and former slaves Harriet Tubman most famous “conductor”

6 Underground Railroad People traveled by night and hid in safe houses during the day Most southerners despised the RR Only helped a small % of slaves Drinking Gourd

7 Quilt Patterns as Secret Messages The Monkey Wrench pattern, on the left, alerted escapees to gather up tools and prepare to flee; the Drunkard Path design, on the right, warned escapees not to follow a straight route.

9 Nat Turner Revolt Deeply religious, educated slave Nat Turner – Claimed he had vision from God to “fix problem” Aug 1831 led a violent uprising in Virginia – Page 410 What did the revolt do?

11 Nat Turner Revolt Virginia Militia stopped revolt killing over 100 slaves, some were not even involved in revolt Turner escaped but caught two months later – Was executed

12 Amistad Revolt Spanish ship (Amistad) left Havana Cuba for plantation in eastern Cuba 50 slaves mutinied and killed captain and some crew members Agreed to spare crew lives if they took them back to Africa Crew agreed but sailed up the coast of the United States

14 Amistad Revolt U.S. warship intercepted Amistad, slaves arrested, charged with murder U.S. Supreme Court hears case 1841 – John Adams was hired to represent the slaves – Defense argued that slaves were kidnapped; acting in self-defense – Slaves win the case and were allowed to go back to Africa (35 of the 43- some died while in jail) – Court says nothing else about slavery

16 John Brown Oct. 1859 attack on Harper’s Ferry VA – Page 461 Brown and his men were defeated by federal troops Brown was captured and later executed as a traitor
