1 st Annual TAACCCT Community at INNOVATE Gerry Hanley, Rick Lumadue, & Maria Fieth SKILLSCOMMONS Brought to You By California State University MERLOT

Welcome! Thank you for joining us to… Collaboratively Design Strategies to Establish and Sustain TAACCCT Communities Why? To Accelerate and Improve Workforce Development for the United States

Agenda- Wed 8:30-9:30 am Overview of sustainability strategies and the connections to community building What do we hope to accomplish with your leadership How do we plan to accomplish our collective goals Overview of SkillsCommons services that should help this initiative succeed

“Sustainability”- the Gold Ring What are we trying to “sustain” from TAACCCT? – Instructional Solutions Curriculum, pedagogies, assessments, etc. – Academic Program Solutions Outreach and recruitment, advising and student support services, accelerated credentials, etc. – Leadership Community Expertise, conceptual frameworks, commitment and passion to solve problems, ideas-research findings, etc. Relationships with partnering stakeholders, including industry, workforce associations, community, and higher ed Products & Services sustained through a living library – SkillsCommons Community of Colleagues networking and collaborating on projects- TAACCCT IMPACTCommunities

Sounds “Good” But… Let’s Get Real… We all have limited time for anything “new” limited priorities for anything outside our institution limited control of anything that is collaborative with other organizations What Can I Get From the IMPACTCommunities that: I Really Need – What is ESSENTIAL for success? I Can’t Find a Substitute – What I can’t get anywhere else?

Sustainability Markers What is ESSENTIAL? What is NOT SUBSTITUTABLE? If we can answer these questions, We key ingredients for a sustainable strategy… These are the questions that will thread through our planning activities today.

Shaping The ESSENTIALS Choosing Focus Areas (Wed Afternoon) IMPACT Potential (Thurs) Next Steps (Thurs Afternoon and Friday) Focus Areas: Do We Design Communities Organized by: By Industry Sectors (e.g. Manufacturing, IT, etc.) By Program Strategies (e.g. Career Pathways, stacked/latticed credentials; student support services) By Pedagogical Strategies (e.g. Evidence-Based Design; Online learning; CBE; PLA, Resiliency, etc.) By Partnership Strategies (e.g. With the workforce organizations (fed, state, national, local), employers, etc. Other Strategies IMPACT Potential Where Can We Make A BIG Difference? 1.Within each Focus Area, what would be very impactful goals? 2.What is required to have an impact? 3.What leadership is needed? NEXT STEPS We need to demonstrate that this strategy is reasonable, doable, and valuable 1.What can we get done before we leave? 2.What can we get done within 2-3 months which will lay the foundation for… 3.What we can get done within 6-9 months We need to identify the resources we need to implement this strategy What do you want in the SkillsCommons Gift Registry?

Scaling Sustainability Sustaining success at many levels – At your project level – what do you need within your current project? – At the TAACCCT program level – what do the collective grantees need across the US? – At the national higher ed & workforce development level – what do theses stakeholders need? The interactions between all these levels are part of the SkillsCommons Sustainability Strategy

Collaboration is Key to Sustainability in Higher Ed Where can I get the resources I need to continue my program/project/services when the grant ends? To get funds… – Collaboration provides a methodology to scale impact and to distribute risks which can make it more attractive to invest in your program. To get the products and services… – Collaboration provides a trusted community to exchange valued resources without (much) funding. To get the people… – Collaboration provides a trusted community to exchange expertise and labor without (much) funding.

In Summary… Building collaborative communities is a key strategy for sustaining TAACCCT programs at your institutions and beyond. For collaborative communities to be successful, we have to design them to deliver essential and non- substitutable value to its members. YOU ARE THE LEADERS WHO CAN BUILD ESSENTIAL AND NON-SUBSTITUTABLE VALUE INTO THE DESIGN OF THESE COMMUNITIES!

Comments-Questions-Feedback

We have a strong start… SkillsCommons and the TAACCCT Learning Network have “resources” that have already helped us get started.

Department of Labor: Funding, program requirements, Workforce GPS, convenings – with Evan Burke Jobs For the Future: Project management and communication issues with Christian Laguard (Am. Assoc. of Community Colleges) & Allysha Roth (JFF) Virtually Here! – Creative Commons: OER Licensing issues (Paul Stacey) – CAST: Accessibility issues (Sam Johnston) – NSF ATE Centers: STEM and implementation issues (Anne Beheler) WE ARE ALL HERE TO SUPPORT YOUR SUCCESS!

Why Are We Facilitating? CSU and MERLOT have a cooperative agreement between California State University (CSU) and Dept of Labor which includes sustainability goals CSU and MERLOT have established missions to expand and sustain Open Educational Resources and instructional innovation in higher education CSU and MERLOT has extensive experience in building and sustaining collaborative communities in higher education

The Journey to Sustainability You have to be successful with your TAACCCT grant, otherwise there will be nothing worthwhile to sustain. – SkillsCommons SUPPORT Center is here to help We all have to be successful with transitioning off the TAACCCT funding to an alternative ecosystem that can provide the expertise, tools, technologies, and resources to sustain the workforce development initiatives. – SkillsCommons CONNECT Center is here to help

CONNECT Together SkillsCommons has a sustainable and customizable infrastructure to enable TAACCCT grantees to go beyond your individual grants – CONNECT CENTER services – MERLOT-OLC Conferences (INNOVATE annually and we can organize regional conferences)

Going far can seem overwhelming…
