Lemur Leaf Frog (Hylomantis Frog) By: Christina Gbenado

It was once considered the most common species in Costa Rica. It spends its resting hours curled up on a leaf perfectly camouflaged. It takes 90 to 150 days for a tadpole to hatch. They have a very slender like body. They have a very nocturnal lifestyle.

Like many other frogs, the lemur leaf frog lives in undisturbed humid rainforest, in sloping lowland forests.

Breeding takes place during the rainy season, and the male lemur leaf frog produces a short clicking call to females. Like all leaf frogs, the lemur leaf frog lays between 15 and 30 eggs on a overhanging leaf. However, while many leaf frogs then wrap the leaf around the cluster of eggs, the lemur leaf frog does not.

The Lemur Leaf Frog’s diet consists of insects, snails, and other small invertebrates. The Lemur Leaf Frog’s predators are birds and feral animals. The biggest killer of the Lemur Frogs is a deadly fungi that has almost wiped out the population of Lemur Leaf Frogs. There are only 242 left in the wild

Some abiotic factors of the Lemur Frog’s habitat include temperature, water, sunlight, oxygen, and soil. Some biotic factors include grass, trees, flowers, etc. Limiting factors in the Lemur Leaf Frogs environment include space, food, and death. The Lemur Leaf Frog blend into its environment by using its camouflage abilities.

The Lemur Leaf Frog is a butterfly species because this fungi does not just infect Lemur Leaf Frogs, but other species of frogs as well. If we do not help the Lemur Leaf Frogs, not only will the Lemur Leaf frogs be extinct, but other species of frogs we be extinct as well.
