How is the periodic table organized?

1.Turn to pages 304 & 305 of the text book. 2.Use the information to color all the metals one color. 3.Then do the same for all the non-metals (different color) 4.Then color the metalloids. Be careful coloring Hydrogen. Now using Page 306 & 307. Briefly describe (bullet points/key words) metals, non metals and metalloids Complete this on the back of your periodic table. Have it checked by Miss Orr

Does where an element is on the periodic table affect its chemical properties? Flipchart round up of all elements

1.All the equipment should be at your station with a hotplate. 2.Fill the large beaker to the150ml line. 3.Turn the hotplate up to 5 (50 degrees celcius) then put the beaker on the hotplate carefully add 1 teaspoon Of salt. 4.Stir the solution until all the salt dissappears. 5. Now continue to add and stir until the solution is SATURATED. That means no more will dissolve. 6. Turn the hotplate off and allow to cool before you try the next part! 7. Now filter the solution into the smaller beaker. Miss Orr can show you how to do that…

1.Carefully place the small beaker on the hotplate and turn it to 9 (90 degree celcius) 2. Allow the solution to boil. You will know you are done when it spits at you. 3. Then switch the plate off and allow to cool. What are you left with? Be prepared to explain to the class if you made a mixture or compound and explain how you know this…

A mixture is when substances mix bit do not chemically join! Not chemical reactions because no new substance is made

As you move down the periods the elements should become more reactive because the electrons are further away from the nucleus.

Element problem sheet

Atoms like to have either a full or empty valance shell

Group 1 (Alkali metals) elements are the most reactive because they have only got 1 electron to lose! As you move across the table from left to right the elements gradually become less reactive ! Alkali metal clips

Ions are charged atoms. That means when they gain or lose electrons. H+ Na + H+ Hydrogen ions = ACID OH - Hydroxyl ions = Base

Litmus paper Litmus tells us if a substance is acidic/basic or neutral

Universal paper tells exactly how acidic or Basic a substance is… Moving from PH 1 to PH 7. 1 is the most acidic and 7 is neutral Moving from PH 7 TO PH 14. 7 is neutral and 14 is the most basic.
