2 Conference of European Statisticians (CES) Heads of statistical offices of UNECE and OECD member countries + others (such as Brazil, China, Colombia, Mongolia, South Africa) International organizations active in statistics CES Bureau: Canada (Chair), Armenia, Austria, Finland, Mexico, New Zealand, UK, Eurostat, OECD, CIS-Statistics Committee, UNSD, IMF, World Bank Established in 1953 UNECE Statistical Division provides secretariat Main tasks: – coordinate statistical activities in the region – respond to emerging needs for international statistical cooperation – improve national statistics and their international comparability – adopt statistical standards in UNECE region

3 CES Road Map on statistics for SDGs (1) CES discussed response of official statistics to SDGs in June 2015: – Declaration of the role of national statistical offices on measuring and monitoring SDGs – launch work on a road map for the development of official statistics for monitoring SDGs in the UNECE region Feb. 2016 set up a Steering Group on statistics for SDGs – Switzerland and United States (co-chairs), Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Kyrgyzstan, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, Russia, Sweden, Turkey, Eurostat, OECD, UNECE First draft of the road map on statistics for SDGs presented to CES plenary session in April 2016

4 CES Road Map on statistics for SDGs (2) Aim: to guide the CES work on statistics for SDGs Context (decisions and mandates), what, who, when, with whom needs to be done 5 substantive parts: 1) assessing readiness to report on SDG indicators 2) selecting regional indicators 3) reporting on SDG indicators 4) capacity building 5) communication and dissemination

5 CES decision Road Map providing useful practical guidance Approved structure of the Road Map – Steering Group to continue the work Important to link with developments at policy level UN and IOs secretariats to clarify the roles of IOs in SDG reporting and related data flows Need a mechanism to share country experience Share the Road Map with relevant stakeholders, including at policy level, and collect feedback Serve as input to Global Action Plan on statistics for SDGs Present to next CES – 19-21 June 2017, Geneva
