Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine Hunting for answers… Quick questions: What is starch broken down into? glucose accepted What are proteins broken down into? Amino acids What do you think the role of carbohydrase is in the digestive system? Where do you think protease is located in the body? Think, Pair, Share – A full sentence for each.

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine Learning Objectives Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine Why are enzymes important in digestion? (6 mark question ) Write a paragraph explaining your ideas. You should include: -The different enzymes in the body. -What these enzymes break down. -Why food needs to be broken down. -Where the smaller molecules are absorbed. Support: You may draw pictures to help you answer. Extra challenge: What would happen if we didn’t have enzymes?

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine 4 marks: Few spelling and grammatical errors. Some evidence of key scientific terminology. Reference to at least ONE of the following enzymes: proteases OR carbohydrases (amylase). WHAT THEY BREAK DOWN or the products MADE the reasons why large food molecules are digested. 2 marks: Several spelling and grammatical errors. Little evidence of key scientific terminology. Reference to at least one enzyme and, what it breaks down or the products produced. 6 marks: Excellent spelling and grammar. Use of key scientific terminology. Reference to proteases, and carbohydrases (amylase), WHAT THEY BREAK DOWN and the products they produce. Reference to The reasons why large food molecules are digested and what would happen if we didn’t have enzymes. Peer-assessment Read your partners paragraph. Sign and date their work.

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine Enzymes in the home How many items are made using enzymes?

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine The Small Intestine – The Villi How do you think these structures are adapted to this role? Why do you think the food molecules need to go into the blood?

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine The Small Intestine – The Villi The small intestine contains villi. These are small finger-like structures which increase the surface area of the small intestine so molecules are absorbed faster. The food is absorbed into the blood.

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine      Starch molecules – large and branched Amylase – digestive enzyme Breaks down starch to Maltose Still too big! Maltase in the small intestine breaks down maltose to glucose units Readily absorbed.

Explain the importance of enzymes in digestion Design an experiment to copy the small intestine and explain its role in getting food into the blood stream Outcomes Describe what happens to food in the small intestine Key Words Villi Small Intestine Prediction Have a look at the method on the sheet: What do you think you are trying to find out in the investigation? What do you think will happen in the investigation? Why does 1 tube only have starch in it and the other have starch and enzyme in it? Why is it put in a water bath heated to 35°C? Use these questions to write a prediction
