1 Persuasive Strategies and Characteristics

2 Claim State your argument.
Example: I am going to try to convince you that chocolate is not a healthy snack.

3 Big Names Important people or experts can make your argument seem more convincing. Example: Former U.S. president Bill Clinton thinks that junk food should be taken out of vending machines.

4 Logos Facts, numbers, and information can be very convincing.
Example: A Snickers bar has 280 calories and 30 grams of sugar; that’s not very healthy.

5 Pathos Empathy- Getting people to feel happy, sad, or angry can help your argument. Example: Your donation might just get this puppy off the street and into a good home.

6 Ethos/Ethics If people believe and trust in you, you’re more likely to persuade them. Example: Believe me! I’ve been there before. I’m just like you.

7 Kairos Try to convince your audience that this issue is so important they must act now. Example: This is a one-time offer. You can’t get this price after today.

8 Research Using reliable research can help your argument seem convincing. Example: A recent study by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine found that students who watch TV during the week don’t do as well in school. ALWAYS CITE THE source.

9 Characteristics- Introduction
The 1st paragraph - states the position Should be limited in scope – not broad or vague. Should include the thesis statement (the stand on your position) Include 2 or 3 reasons for your position.

10 Characteristics – The body
3 paragraphs Each paragraph should begin with a transition word (see handout)  and should contain powerful words (see handout) Present ideas logically, factually & clearly possible formats could include a comparison and contrast between the two debatable sides to the topic Support ideas using quotes, statistics, examples, and/or facts use any available resource to back your position including published books, television, Internet, etc.

11 Characteristics – The Conclusion
Ending with a strong argument, summary, or call for action clearly redefine the topic and restate your most compelling evidence
