At the equator the atmosphere is warmer; at the poles it is cooler.
You would expect air to simply rise over the equator and sink at the poles.

No, because of the Coriolis Effect
Coriolis Effect: The apparent curving of the path of a moving object from an otherwise straight path due to the Earth’s rotation
A force that deflects moving objects to one side because the Earth is spinning.
The object is still going straight but the Earth moves underneath it, making it look like it is curving.
In the Northern Hemisphere, the Coriolis Force deflects objects to the right.

4. Global Wind Belts Use this to label your global winds map.
Label the name of the wind belt AND draw arrows to show which way the winds blow.

5. Coriolis Effect & Storms
Coriolis Effect is also what makes hurricanes/cyclones rotate
