 The article titled ‘Transforming police services to support women’ is a feature article which is about the new face and good reputation of Malawi Police Service especially through Victim Support Unit (VSU).  The article follows the previous people’s perception towards police when they go to report Gender Based Violence (GBV) issues.  The article brings awareness to GBV victims that they now have a transformed police in Malawi where they can freely report GBV cases.

I wrote a story when I heard what media trainer Pushpa Jamieson went through when she visited one police station especially at a VSU. She went there to research as a journalist on what women pass through when they go to report on GBV.

 The story targeted women who are still afraid of police officers fearing they will be mistreated when they go to report GBV.  The story had a positive impact on women who fear to go and report GBV cases to police.  The Malawi Police Service public relations department said they received some congratulatory comments from gender activists. This meant, on the other hand, that women who read the story realised that police has now changed for the better in as far as its treatment to GBV victims is concerned. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

 I interviewed Jamieson who was once mistreated by police officers at VSU.  I interviewed one man and two women. I chose these sources because of their authority towards the subject I was pursuing. Sources: 1. Emma Kaliya (Gender activist and NGOGCN) for her reaction towards the good news. 2. Rhoda Manjolo (Malawi Police Service Spokesperson) for the secret behind the positive change 3. Fernando Jorg Manhica (Director of Legal and Council Affairs Division in Mozambique.)  For the story to have a SADC flavour (Targets in Gender Protocol Summit are for whole SADC) 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

Use one slide for each result, include examples of evidence  Service delivery  Women’s empowerment  Men for change  Public participation  Changes at the work place  Outreach through the media  Changes at household level  Capacity building  Changes in attitudes  Changes at a policy level  Any other changes 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

 Service delivery The article helped readers to know the good service provision at police’s VSU  Women empowerment The story empowers women through enlightening them about the provision of friendly services at VSU  Change in attitude The article changes the attitude of many women in Malawi who fear reporting GBV at VSU

 I got a phone call from one of the Malawi Police Service public relations officers from Dowa district, Kondwani Kandiado, who said the article was timely as it would enable more women to visit VSU freely. This police officer is also a member of Mponela police VSU. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

 I have done follow up stories especially by focusing on stories that bring forward women and men who have received good treatment from VSU at police station. One of the stories ‘When a violent husband changes’ focused on how VSU in Lilongwe helped the violent husband to change for the better. The police intervened when the wife had reported about the violent behaviour of her husband. 50/50 BY 2015: DEMANDING A STRONG POST 2015 AGENDA

Kalazi talking to fellow villagers on how he has changed from being an abusive husband to a loving husband.

Thank You Zikomo “Around the corner, equality is coming” Gender Equality by 2015, Yes We Must! With friendly services for GBV victims at police station, gender equality is possible.
