OR SI CLAUSES French Conditional Clauses

Phrase of the week Avec des si (et des mais), on mettrait Paris en bouteille. With if’s and but’s, one could put Paris in a bottle.

Alternate English Translations If if’s and and’s were pots and pans there'd be no work for tinkers' hands. If wishes were horses then beggars would ride.

What’s so important about “if” (si)? If you didn’t know how to use an “if’ clause then you would not be able to talk about something that is unlikely to occur. Or in other words…talk about something that would happen if something else happened

English proverb example If wishes were horses, beggars would ride. Or in other words, beggars would be able to ride horses if all it took was to wish for them.

If-then clauses, si clauses, conditional sentences Sentences with one clause stating a condition or possibility… If I was rich…. (Si j’étais riche…) And a second clause naming a result which is dependent upon that condition. ….I would buy Monaco. (…j’achèterais Monaco.)

Actual French classportion To create this type of conditional tense, use si + imperfect (stating the condition) + conditional (stating what would happen).imperfectconditional Review the Imperfect tense and the Conditional tense.

There are different types of si clauses, but they all have two things in common: In English, the result clause would start with “then,” but not in French. English: If I was rich, (then) I would buy Monaco. French: Si j’étais riche, j’achèterais Monaco. The clauses can be in either order, si clause followed by result clause, or result clause followed by si clause. I would by Monaco if I was rich. J’achèterais Monaco si j’étais riche.

Pratiquons (let’s practice) 1. If I went to Paris, I would go… 2. If I ate at a French café, I would eat…. 3. If I traveled to France, I would visit…. 4. If I went on vacation for a month, I would take the plane to….. 5. If I had a million dollars, I would…. Questions? Partner work.

Looking at the news… Who is President Hollande?

Looking at the news… Mali Where is it? What has been happening there? Who came in to assist? Why?

IanTurner/BNPS Adam Sage, Paris Last updated at 11:41PM, April 7 2013 With a discredited government, rock bottom ratings and a gloomy economic outlook, François Hollande, the French President, might have assumed that things could not get worse. Now his camel has been eaten. The young animal, a gift to Mr Hollande for liberating Mali, has been killed and stewed, according to Jean-Yves Le Drian, France’s Defence Minister. Mr Le Drian, who was informed of the camel’s demise by officers fighting Islamic terrorists in the former French West African colony, has passed the news on to the Élysée Palace, according to Parisian media outlets.

Picture Story S’il vous plaît, get out a piece of paper. Fold your paper longwise then in half twice to make 8 squares. In simple pictures, recreate the article we just read. You have 7 minutes. You will then share your story, in French, with your partner. Some will share with the class.

Using what you know about conditional phrases: Create three phrases on your own about M. Hollande, his camel or Mali. Ex. If I visited Mr. Hollande (President of France), I would tell him….. You have 1 minute.

Les exercises…traduisez en français If I went to Paris, I would go… If I ate at a French café, I would eat…. If I traveled to France, I would visit…. If I left on vacation for a month, I would take the plane to….. If I visited Mr. Hollande (President of France), I would tell him…..

Les reponses… Si j’allais à Paris, j’irais…. Si je mangais au café français, je mangerais…. Si je voyagais en France, je visiterais…. Si je partais en vacances pour un mois, je prendrais l’avion à ….. Si je rendais visite à M. Hollande (Monsieur le Président de la France), je lui dirais….

Think/Pair/Share Please pair with your partner and compare notes. Share with class.

Back to our phrase of the week: Avec des si (et des mais), on mettrait Paris en bouteille. With if’s and but’s, one could put Paris in a bottle. (I feel a song coming on….)

Hanna “Et Si” materials needed: List of imperfect and conditional verbs used in song-imperfect in one column, conditional in another. (written on white board or printed on their song sheet) Song in French with “holes” in it where they put correct verb. Hanna «Et Si» chanson- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCaWuHYP R4A

Sample of song with vocabulary “holes”: Hanna - «Et si» Avec des si si si si si je ____________ mettre Paris en bouteille je met tout au conditionnel je m'imagine monts et merveilles Avec des si si si si si je ___________ mettre Paris en bouteille et moi, je passe ma vie, à mettre des si et si j’___________ née sur Neptune et si j'___________ moins dans la lune si j'___________ de m'inventer des belles histoires, des contes de fée

Mademoiselle Hanna Have you ever wished a relationship would be different? That you had done things differently?

Directions for students Listen to song. It goes fast but don’t worry, we will listen to it several times and in chunks. Put appropriate verbs in holes. Some are imperfect tense, others are conditional tense. I will show you how this is done, then we will do it as a class and then you will do the last section on your own (when the list of verbs is much smaller-bonus). Throughout the song, create mental pictures of what you are reading.

Directions for Teaching Listen to a short section. Do first, second and third stanza for class. Tell them what I’m visualizing. Start song over and have them listen to first section plus another short section. Fill in holes as a class with student help. Have them tell me what they are visualizing. Listen to first and second sections, then do third section listening/filling in holes as class. Report on visualizing again. Listen to another section but have them complete holes individually. Remind them to visualize. Correct as a class. Have them sing to as much of the song as they can, even if it’s only the chorus.

English translation of “And If” (Et Si)-section With "if's" I could put Paris in a bottle I put everything in the conditional tense I picture plenty of incredible things With "if's" I could put Paris in a bottle And me, I spend my life putting "if's" in front of everything And if I was born on Neptune And if my head wasn't in the clouds so much If I stopped making up Beautiful stories, fairy tales If love was easier It it wasn't indelible If I could start all over again Press 'rewind' If that night I had dared To look at you and kiss you And if I had more confidence Maybe I'd already be in your arms

One more slide of translation And if I was a panda bear We would hunt me away from my home If my mother was Madonna I'd already be in People and Rich & Famous33 With "if's" I could put Paris in a bottle I put everything in the conditional tense I picture plenty of incredible things With "if's" I could put Paris in a bottle And me, I spend my life putting "if's" in front of everything If I was a little mouse I would slip into your life I'd know all your secrets I'd finally know who you are And if I were a magician I'd take out of my hat The winning lotto ticket I'd buy myself hundreds of dresses

Your turn… (C’est à toi) Find 3 If statements to share with the class. You have 1 minute. Turn to your partner and summarize what the song is about.
