Napoleon Bonaparte History and Ender Game connections By: Dan Pemble

Napoleons History (Early Life) Born 15 August 1769 Died 5 May 1821 Napoleon was born at Ajaccio in Corsica to parents of noble Italian ancestry. He trained as an artillery officer in mainland France. He rose to prominence under the French First Republic and led successful campaigns against the First and Second Coalitions arrayed against France.

Napoleons History (Main reign) In 1799, he staged a coup d'état and installed himself as First Consul; five years later the French Senate proclaimed him emperor. French military and political leader who rose to prominence during the latter stages of the French Revolution and its associated wars in Europe. Emperor of the French from 1804 to 1815

Napoleon (Loss of power and death) In 1813, the Sixth Coalition defeated his forces at Leipzig; the following year the Coalition invaded France, forced Napoleon to abdicate and exiled him to the island of Elba. Less than a year later, he escaped Elba and returned to power, but was defeated at the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815.. Napoleon spent the last six years of his life in confinement by the British on the island of Saint Helena. An autopsy concluded he died of stomach cancer, but there has been some debate about the cause of his death, as some scholars have speculated that he was a victim of arsenic poisoning.

Ender Game Connections (Napoleon Bonapart) Napoleon Bonaparte is referenced twice in the Ender's Game novel.

1 st Mention Colonel Graff mentions him first when defending his actions to Ender Wiggin after the shuttle first arrives at Battle School QUOTE "I won't lie now, either," said Graff. "My job isn't to be friends. My job is to produce the best soldiers in the world. In the whole history of the world. We need a Napoleon. An Alexander. Except that Napoleon lost in the end, and Alexander flamed out and died young. We need a Julius Caesar, except that he made himself dictator, and died for it. My job is to produce such a creature, and all the men and women he'll need to help him. Nowhere in that does it say I have to make friends with children."

2 nd Mention He comes up again later in a chat between Graff and Major Anderson after Ender kills the giant in the Mind Game QUOTE "But shouldn't they still act like children? They aren't normal. They act like-- history. Napoleon and Wellington. Caesar and Brutus."

In conclusion Napoleon is a great connector from history into this book. Being a stand out figure from history for most people, he helps people better relate and understand the situation that the characters are in.
