What is Anti-Semitism? The word ANTI-SEMITISM means prejudice against or hatred of Jews. The Holocaust, the state-sponsored persecution and murder or GENOCIDE of European Jews by Nazi Germany and its collaborators between 1933 and 1945, is history’s most extreme example of anti-Semitism. PERSECUTION means hostility and ill-treatment of people, especially because of race or political or religious beliefs HOLOCAUST is a word of Greek origin meaning "sacrifice by fire." The Nazis, who came to power in Germany in January 1933, believed that Germans were "racially superior" and that the Jews, deemed "inferior," were an alien threat to the so-called German racial community. However, anti-Semitism did not start with the Nazis. It started 2000 years ago….

What were the Origins of Anti- Semitism? You are about to watch a 13-minute film about the history of anti- Semitism from its origins in the days of the early Christian church until the Holocaust in the 1940s. You will watch the video in separate parts. Please feel free to make notes in your exercise book as you watch the film. PART 1: THE ORIGINS OF ANTI-SEMITISM Watch the first 3 minutes of the video on European anti-Semitismvideo on European anti-Semitism Pay particular attention to the reasons why the Jews and the Christians fell out Then complete the gap-fill on the timeline sheet Can you see examples of early anti-Semitism on your timeline TASK 1

How and why were Jews persecuted in the Middle Ages? PART 2: THE TREATMENT OF JEWS IN THE MIDDLE AGES Watch 3 to 6 minutes of the film which describes how the Jews were persecuted in the Middle Ages up to the Protestant Reformation Can you see examples of persecution during this period on your timeline What does this period tell you about the changing nature of anti-Semitism?

How and why were Jews persecuted in the early Modern era? PART 3: THE PERSECUTION OF JEWS IN THE EARLY MODERN ERA Watch 6 to 8.50 minutes of the film which describes how the Jews were persecuted after the Middle Ages Can you see examples of persecution during this period on your timeline Why do you think Jews were still being persecuted 1800 years after the death of Christ?

How did Anti-Semitism change in the 19 th Century? PART 4: RACIAL ANTI-SEMITISM Watch the rest of the film which describes how anti-Semitism changed in the 19 th Century What other reasons were there for anti-Semitism in the early 1900s? Hitler came to power in 1933 and murdered 6 million Jews. This was the most extreme form of anti-Semitism. Do you see any continuity in what Hitler did and the previous 1900 years? Why do you think anti-Semitism is called the “Longest Hatred”

Which figure is the Jewish person? Can you work out what year this painting might have been drawn from your timeline?

What is a visible minority? Can you think of a small group within a larger group which is made distinctive (stands out) because of its dress, customs or language? Some minorities are easy to see or visible because of their skin colour or physical appearance – these are called visible minorities

What activity is happening in this picture? Can you work out what year this painting might have been drawn from your timeline?

What can we learn about how Jews were treated from medieval sources? In this 15th century woodcut, Jews are depicted as murdering the child Simon of Trent. This "murder" is one of the sources of the medieval blood libel: the allegation that Jews used Christian children's blood to make matzoh (unleavened bread) during Passover. The Jews can be recognized by the circular patches sewn on their clothing and by the money bags they carry.

A History of Anti-Semitism before the Holocaust Using 5 colours, shade in each one of the squares next to the following categories of persecution Making false accusations against the Jews Violent acts against the Jews – the correct word for these were pogroms Forcing Jews to leave their homes or live away from non- Jews Making it difficult for Jews to earn a living Making the Jews stand out as being different Then use the colours to colour code events on the timeline TASK 2
