-We will learn the various planes. -We will learn the various 3 dimensional movements of the human body within these planes. -We will learn the axis of movement on these planes. *We need to learn the planes so that we understand the movements within the planes. This way we can analyze and understand performance.

Definition of a plane: It is a flat surface. Each plane has a pathway through space and describes a dimension in space.

3 Major types of planes. They are called Cardinal Planes. a. Sagittal Plane-a body part that can move in a anterior and posterior direction. This is considered moving on a Sagittal plane.

 b. Frontal Plane(also known as the Coronal Plane)-a body part that can move in a right to left direction.

 3. Transverse Plane- A body part that can sit and spin or rotate.

 * Not all movement has to (nor will) occur from the anatomical position.  * This is how the planes were defined.  Any plane that is not defined by purely saggital, frontal, or transverse but has a combination of two or more of these planes is called Oblique.

 What is an Axis? An Axis is an imaginary line around which a part moves.  Think of an axis as the hinge on a door. All motion of the door occurs around the hinge.

.Mediolateral Axis- This is the line that runs from the medial part to the lateral part of the body or vice versa. This would be body parts that move right to left and left to right. ( this is also know as the frontal Horizontal Axis) An example would be the wrist.z -Circular Axis-When a body part moves around and axis in a circular fashion this is known as Circular Movement.(example would be a shoulder)

This is a line that runs anterior to posterior(front to back). Movements that occur in the frontal plane move around this axis. Example: This would be leaning your upper body from right to left with the axis at your belly button.

 This axis runs horizontally and is located in the sagittal plane.

 This is the imaginary line that runs from inferior to superior.  Movement around this axis accurs in the transverse plane.  This is also known as the vertical axis.

 1. What is a body position called when it is in anatomical position?  2. Why is anatomical position important?  3. If point A is located farther toward the front of the body than point B how do we describe pointA? Point B?  4. What are the four types of Planes?  5. What is an axis? Why is it important?
