Newton’s Laws Which one is it?

Newton’s Laws of Motion 1 st : An object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays at rest, unless acted on by an unbalanced force. 2 nd : The acceleration of an object depends on the force acting on the object and the mass of the object. 3 rd : Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.

Question 1 You run into your friend while in-line skating, and both of you fall in opposite directions. 3 rd law!

Question 2 A book left on the table overnight is there when you return in the morning. 1 st law!

Question 3 A baseball hit with a bat accelerates more than a bowling ball hit with a bat. 2 nd law!

Question 4 A space shuttle propels gas particles out the back of the shuttle and is able to travel forward through space. 3 rd law!

Question 5 A balloon flies forward when air quickly escapes from it. 3rd law!

Question 6 A soccer ball continues to roll until it hits something. 1st law!

Question 7 The bike you are riding hits a hole and stops quickly, but you fly forward over the handlebars. 1 st law!

Question 8 A golfer hits a volleyball and a golf ball. The volleyball accelerates slower than the golf ball. 2 nd law!

Question 9 The clothes you left on the floor are still there when you come home from school. 1 st law!

Question 10 A baseball hit with a wooden bat has more force than a baseball hit with a plastic bat. 2 nd law!

Predict: Question 1 Mr. Novick and his son Colin are playing catch. We assume that Mr. Novick is stronger than Colin. Which one will accelerate the ball more? 2 nd law!

Predict: Question 2 If you leave a cookie on a plate and there is no one else in the house, where will the cookie be in an hour? 1 st law!

Predict: Question 3 If you let the air out of a balloon, what will happen to the balloon? 3 rd law!

Predict: Question 4 The horse you’re riding stops quickly. What happens to you? 1 st law!

Predict: Question 5 A football player kicks two footballs, one filled with air and one filled with helium, which has less mass than air. Which one accelerates more? 2 nd law!

Predict: Question 6 Two ice skaters glide into each other at full speed. What will happen? 3 rd law!

Now it is your turn! Create an original (not already mentioned) situation to describe each one of Newton’s Three Laws of Motion.

WHICH LAW? # 1 A frog leaping upward off his lily pad is pulled downward by gravity and lands on another lily pad instead of continuing on in a straight line. 1 st law!

WHICH LAW? # 2 As you walk forward, your back foot pushes back on the ground. 3 rd law!

WHICH LAW? # 3 When you are standing up in a subway train, and the train suddenly stops, your body continues to go forward. 1 st law!

WHICH LAW? # 4 After you start up your motorbike, as you give it more gas, it goes faster. 2 nd law!

WHICH LAW? # 5 A pitched baseball goes faster than one that is gently thrown. 2 nd law!

WHICH LAW? # 6 A swimmer pushes water back with her arms, but her body moves forward. 3 rd law!

WHICH LAW? # 7 As an ice skater pushes harder with his leg muscles, he begins to move faster. 2 nd law!

WHICH LAW? # 8 When Bobby, age 5, and his dad are skipping pebbles on the pond, the pebbles that Bobby’s dad throws go farther and faster than his. 2 nd law!

WHICH LAW? # 9 When you paddle a canoe, the canoe goes forward. 3 rd law!

WHICH LAW? # 10 A little girl who has been pulling a sled behind her in the snow is crying because when she stopped to tie her hat on, the sled kept moving and hit her in the back of her legs. 1 st law!
