AGENDA – 8/27/2015 Take out composition notebook and a pen or pencil! Pick up your name tent from the bin! O Setup Notebooks  If you don’t have one today, come see me! O pH Review O Testing the pH mini-experiment Homework: Syllabus/Lab Safety Contract, signature form on Moodle due by Fri. 9/4/15

Front or Back of the Cover O Write: O Your Name O Subject O Class Period

Back of the Cover Write: O Northwest High School values notebooks as an organizational tool that provides a record of learning through: Problem solving Scientific inquiry Critical writing

First Page of your Notebook Write: Unit 1: Building Blocks of Life, Cell Structure and Viruses

1. Go to the back of the first page and set up your Table of Contents like below. Unit 1:Table of Contents Page(s)TitleDate(s)Grade 2.Once you have your pages set up, write in your first two entries: 8/27 8/27 – 10/2 Bell-ringers Testing pH 1-4 5

NOTEBOOKS!!! ● These will stay in the room, unless you need to take them home to study or use them to complete work. ● I will warn you ahead of time when I will be grading out of your notebook. If your notebook is not here when I grade them, then it is late. ● Put your notebooks in the numbered bin for your class.

AGENDA – 8/28/2015 Take out composition notebook and a pen or pencil! Pick up your name tent from the bin! O pH Review O Testing the pH mini-experiment Homework: Syllabus/Lab Safety Contract, signature form on Moodle due by Fri. 9/4/15

What are things you brainstormed that can affect how a living thing functions? We have a lab coming up soon where we will explore various factors that may affect how the body functions… Salinity- amount of salt Temperature- cold or hot Amount of water pH

Section 6.1 Summary – pages 141-151 The pH is a measure of how acidic or basic a solution is. pH stands for the “Potential of Hydrogen” Acids and Bases react differently in water, depending on what the Hydrogens in the molecules of a substance do in water, decides if the substance is an acid or base. A scale with values ranging from below 0 to above 14 is used to measure pH.

Substances with a pH below 7 are acidic. An acid is any substance that forms positively charged hydrogens (H + ) in water. For example, if you put HCl (hydrochloric acid) in water it will break up into H+ and Cl- The Hydrogens will separate from the rest of the molecule.

Substances with a pH above 7 are basic. A base (or alkaline) is any substance that forms OH- (hydroxide) in water. For example, if you put NaOH (Sodium hydroxide) in water it will break up into Na+ and OH- The Hydroxide compound will separate from the rest of the molecule.

Substances with a pH OF 7 are neutral. A neutral substance has equal amount of H + and OH-. Examples: Water, Milk, Saliva, Blood

1.For each substance above, write whether you think it is acidic, basic, or neutral. 2.Also for each, write where you think it would be on the pH scale (what #?). 1. RUBBING ALCOHOL 4. SOAPY WATER 2. VINEGAR 3. SODA 5. WATER

In the column ‘Name of substance’, write the names of the substances down. For each, make your own hypothesis about where this solution might be on a pH scale. YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE RIGHT…AND YOU DON’T HAVE TO SHARE THE SAME ANSWERS AS YOUR GROUP MEMBERS. Name of Substance Vinegar Rubbing Alcohol Example: Let’s demonstrate (page 5 in journal): Hypothesis: 4 Hypothesis: 8

-Now you will use test strips to see where each solution is on the pH scale. Write your answers in 2 nd and 3 rd column -Example: Vinegar Hypothesis: 7 Rubbing Alcohol Hypothesis: 5

Exit Questions 1.How do we measure acids and bases as scientists? 2.What numbers on the scale describe acids? 3.What numbers are bases? Review for Monday: 4. What is the difference between abiotic and biotic factors? List 3 examples of each factor.
