UNDERSTANDING ART THIS PROGRAM IS DESIGNED TO HELP YOU UNDERSTAND SOME OF THE TYPES OF ART THAT WILL BE COVERED THIS YEAR. IT IS TO BE USED WHEN STUDYING THE DIFFERENT STYLES OF OUR ARTISTS OF THE MONTH

TECHNIQUES AND STYLES REALISM ABSTRACT CUBISM PICASSOISM IMPRESSIONISM SURREALISM Below are the different styles you’ll be learning about. Read each slide and use the mouse to click on the arrow in the bottom, right corner when you’re done reading in order to go to the next slide.

REALISM ( re-al-iz-am)

This is the method of drawing, painting or sculpting things just as they are. Like it’s name all pieces done in this style are realistic and depicted truthfully. This style can be traced back further than the ancient Greeks. It gained popularity in the 17th century with artist who tried to portray people, their everyday lives, problems, and customs accurately. Mostly, ordinary people doing ordinary things. Some writers even began to write using this style.

Notice these two pictures. One is a photograph and the other is a painting done in the Realist style. Can you see how similar they are? The painting is giving an accurate and truthful view of the object.

ABSTRACT (ab-strakt)

In Abstract art you might have look a little more closely in order to see the object, but it is there. The artist has simply eliminated whatever he or she didn’t want you focus on, forcing you to see what they wanted you to see.

CUBISM (Q-biz-am)

This type of art work is considered to have been created by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in Paris between 1907 and 1914. It is very different from Realism. Cubism uses two dimensional shapes to create a new, 20th century form of art. Cubism is exciting and new and can be visually attractive. Its’ geometric shapes such as squares and triangles or even transparent (see-through) cubes and cones can be arranged to create very complex or very simple designs. The artist attempts to share a feeling they may have had while creating the painting with those who look at it. The use of color is very important in cubism.

PICASSOISM (pe-ka-so-iz-am)

This was of course named after Pablo Picasso. Although Picasso painted in several different styles during his lifetime, this is the style that he is most remembered for. Picassoism moves away from paintings based on simply what you can see and tries to record the feelings the artist may have had while creating the painting or sculpture or even the reason why he or she made it in the first place. Understanding the artist’s life can help you understand their work better. Because of this, Picassoism is probably the most personal type of art. Shapes are less important and can be more abtsract, or unrealistic and color will help you understand what is trying to be said. Picassoism is less concerned with the picture and more interested in delivering a message. This was of course named after Pablo Picasso. 18 SURREALISM (sa-re-al-iz-am)

Next to Picassoism, Surrealism is a very misunderstood form of art. It grew from an earlier art form called Dadaism. Surrealism was popular in Europe around the time of WWI and WWII and is, in many ways the opposite of Realism. When you’re asleep and you begin dreaming, your dreams are believed to come from your unconscious (un-kon-shus). Surrealists believe that this is where your imagination comes from as well. As artists, Surrealists try to paint or even write using this source of inspiration. This makes their work seem almost dream-like, or very unrealistic, or behave unnaturally. 22 IMPRESSIONISM (im-presh-un-iz-am)

Impressionism is a style of painting that was named after a painting by Claude Monet, called “Impression, Sunrise”. Although it began in France in the 19th century, it is still a very popular art form today. Impressionist often try to paint their pictures as if capturing a single moment in time. To do this, they broke a lot of the earlier rules of painting by avoiding black colors and earth tones and choosing not to blends their colors too much until they’re on the canvas. There isn’t a lot of detail in this type of painting, which gives them a blurry or undefined look. The brushstrokes are powerful and often gives a rough texture to these paintings. It gives only the impression of the objects instead of a exact picture. Many of these pictures are painted outdoors, rather than a studio Impressionism is a style of painting that was named after a painting by Claude Monet, called “Impression, Sunrise”. 26 Once again this is only a brief overview of just a few forms of art. These are examples of only few of the artists we will study in the fifth grade. If you would like to learn more, speak to your teacher, check out some books from the library and do some research with a parent online.
