8  London is famous for its outstanding places of interest. There are a lot of architectural, art and historic monuments in London such as the British Museum, the Tower of London, the National Gallery, Buckinham Palace, Big Ben and others.

9 The British museum opened in 1753, started from the collection of three rich men. George II gave the royal library to the museum in 1757. The collection is enormous and covers ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt, China and Japan, as well as prehistoric times.

10 Big Ben is the name of the huge clock in one of the tall towers of The House of Parlament. Big Ben is the biggest bell in a clock tower in Britain. It stands on the left bank of the riverThames. Peple can get inside theTower and see the workings of Big Ben. There is no lift and there are three hundred and forty steps up to Big Ben.

12 Tower Bridge is one of the oldest bridges in London. It is over a hundred years old.

13 Buckingham Palace is the London home of the Queen. When the flag is flying on the top she is at home. This famous place, first built in 1703, is in the very center of London. It is like a small town with a police station, 2 post-offices and a swimming pool. There are 600 rooms and 3 miles of red carpet. The people working in the palace have much work to do.

14 The House of Parlament is a large modern building in Gothic Style. First built in the early 11th century it is one of the famous places in London. Fire destroyed most of the old palace in 1834. The present building was completed in 1865. It consists of two Houses: The House of Lords and The House of Commons

16 THE NATIONAL GALLERY  London is very rich in art galleries. The National Gallery is one of the most important picture galleries in the world. It contains modern works of world masters. Cultural life would be impossible without the National Gallery.
