4. History of Jamaican Culture Jamaica was inhabited by Arawak Indians when Columbus explored it in 1494 and named it St. Iago. It remained under Spanish rule until 1655, when it became a British possession.

5. Jamaican Educational Consideration Formal education in Jamaica is delivered via a four level system of education under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture. The four levels include: pre-primary (early childhood), primary, secondary and tertiary (post–secondary) education. Education is compulsory from primary through secondary school.

Jamaica Inclusionary Practices Under the United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child, to which Jamaica is a signatory, every child has the right to an education; this includes children with varying levels of disability or challenges.United Nations Declaration of the Rights of the Child Inclusion  This is the practice of teaching students with special needs in regular classes with the necessary accommodations and services. Exclusion  This is the practice of teaching students with special needs at facilities that only offers special education. The teaching style, classrooms, curriculum is geared towards special education.

Parent/Community Involvement In order to improve academic achievement, every student in elementary school in Jamaica will have a parent or a caregiver who is empowered to participate actively in his or her education. Jamaica will actively solicit and welcome parental participation and advocacy in all aspects of the educational process.
