CAA PEACE Status PEACE Operations Team Presented by Iryna Rozum MSSL Cross-Calibration Meeting, Uppsala, Sweden, 13-15 April 2011

Layout MSSL Calibration progress summary Status of PEACE dataset delivery Open issues Future delivery plan Action Items status

Calibration Progress Summary MSSL Calibration v 5.2 used to produce 2001-2007 PEACE CAA data this interval is longer than CL-3,4 LEEA validity dates (April 2007 for CL-4 LEEA and May 2006 for CL-3 LEEA) Calibration v 6.0 available for 2004-2008, used to make 2008 PEACE CAA data incorporates new alpha-factors obtained from WHI-PEA density comparison studies, but does not include inter-anode calibrations. 2009 alpha-factors have been made subject to final checks Calibration v 5.9 applicable for 2009 PEACE data in the CAA alpha-factors are based on the last day in 2008 and adjusted to take into account commanded MCP levels variations, does not include inter-anode calibrations. Calibrations v 6.1 will be available in future (when ready) currently we are working on 2004 – 2008 interval uses v6.0 alpha factors plus inter-anode calibrations

Progress Since the Last Meeting MSSL Production priority given to key datasets: MOMENTS, PITCH_SPIN and 3DR, but many other datasets have been delivered up to end of 2009. 2008 datasets were produced with calibration v6.0 2009 datasets were produced with calibration v5.9 We expect to have good densities in 2008-2009, but not velocities, therefore MOMENTS for 2008-2009 have Status_Quality = 2. NOTE: inter-anode calibration correction factors affect high order moments significantly, but are usually quite small, so we do not expect other datasets, eg. 3DR, to be much affected going from v6.0 to v5.9. CL-1,2,3,4 2008-2009 datasets will be re-generated and re-delivered once calibration v6.1 is complete. CL-3,4 2006-2007 datasets will also be re-delivered with new v6.1 calibrations (these were not satisfactory due to low gains).

Progress Since the Last Meeting MSSL Development of status information for MOMENTS & PITCH-family products has been resumed Algorithms for Status_PitchAngleCoverage and Status_PADSelectionQuality are complete – flags have been produced for 2001-2008 Status_PartialCoverage – preliminary code has been written; work on this will resume after new calibrations release Significant progress has been made on Status_CountStats (shows risk of undercounting or low statistics) – final software has been completed; 2001—2009 flags are in production. Status_PenetratingRadiation – test software has been written; flags for 2001-2009 have been produced and are being validated; problem dates are regenerated as part of validation. Revision possible. Once status data is validated, a timetable will be planned for the insertion of status quality flags into relevant data product files. Some already delivered data will need to be redelivered with the quality flags added.

Progress Since the Last Meeting MSSL CAVEAT files have been produced and delivered to the CAA from 2001 till end of 2009. Daily CAVEAT files contain information about various problems with the data such as: Science Data Loss: All instruments affected by a spacecraft / ground segment Issue Science Data Loss: PEACE affected by a spacecraft / ground segment Issue or internal problem Caution: Science data: PEACE onboard data handling problem Caution: Science data: IEL related PEACE onboard data handling issue Caution: Science data: PEACE MCP problem Caution: Science data: Penetrating radiation background (TBC) Information: Spacecraft event Information: PEACE operational MCP level change Information: PEACE real-time operations Information: PEACE eclipse operations on one or more spacecraft

Old 3DXPA data were delivered up to 2007 long ago. green box: products in the production stage

PEACE CAA Data Product Delivery Status MSSL NOTE 1. All 2001-2007 generated with calibrations v5.2 NOTE 2. All 2008 data generated with calibrations v6.0, 2009 generated with calibrations v5.9. NOTE 3. Products for 2001-2007 produced but not delivered yet: PADMAR sc1,2,3,4 (old PADMAR data was delivered for 2001-2005) NOTE 4. Aiming to produce and deliver 2010 NOI and OMS soon as these do not require calibrations. grey box: products produced but not delivered

PEACE CAA Data Product Delivery Status MSSL NOTE 1. these Status datasets are in delivered files already. NOTE 2. Status_Quality will be regenerated when other status parameters are done. NOTE 3. some status parameters will be extended to 2010 in the near future.

PEACE CAA Data Product Delivery Status MSSL NOTE 1. the following Status datasets are NOT in delivered files: Status_PADSelectionQuality, Status_PitchAngleCoverage, Status_PenetratingRadiation, Status_CountStats NOTE 2. Further work needed to link the Quality flag to PEACE status parameters. NOTE 3. Definition of Status_FGM is updated but not yet inserted into.cef files NOTE 4. Preliminary code for Status_PartialCoverage is written. The code needs testing and may need some adjustments

Issues affecting the quality of the PEACE dataset PEACE-centric C3-HEEA bad anode (from August 2005) – we are thinking about performing interpolation at the raw data processing stage in order to fill in bad anode data (when resources allow). Penetrating radiation during some perigee passes (cleaning is possible). Further study of how to maximise quality of onboard moments Investigate if bit-flipped data can be recovered Issues where help from other teams will be valuable EFW data (currently available till end of September 2010). WHISPER densities for the remaining months in 2010 (currently available till end of March 2010). FGM cal files (currently available till end of October 2010). these data needed to support work to establish an MCP sensitivity history for PEACE sensors and hence to calibrate 2010 PEACE data => we cannot proceed with 2010 data production till calibration is performed. MSSL Open Issues

Future Plans MSSL 1.Calibration inter-anode calibration 2005 – 2008 for v6.1 (in progress) finish production of v6.0 alpha-factors for 2009 (alpha-factors have been made, need checking) extend v6.1 inter-anode calibration to 2009 2.Short-term deliveries complete remaining datasets (3DXPA, 3DXPALAR) with calibrations v5.2 (2001-2007), v6.0 (2008) & v5.9 (2009) when calibration v6.1 available (2008 – 2009) and PITCH_SPIN HAR/LAR correction available regenerate and deliver key datasets regenerate and deliver remaining datasets with calibration v6.1 3.Deliver datasets for 2010: we can deliver ASAP datasets not requiring calibrations (NOI and OMS) the rest of datasets require 2010 calibrations which cannot be done without data from other teams 4.Medium term: complete status parameter. 5.Long term: redeliver 2000 – 2009 with v6.1 and status parameters.

Status of Action Items MSSL CC8-AI-22 to CIS/PEACE (due date: 10 th Cross-Cal): to include a quality factor to their moments data to filter out poor quality data, e.g., when only noise is observed by CIS due to low ion flux measurements, when one can assume strong noise from photoelectrons in PEACE, etc. The quality factor needs to be specified also in the user guide CLOSED The top level PEACE flag Status_Quality conforms to the CAA MDD definition of Quality and this is spelled out in UG. Status flags for interference from WHISPER and EFW have been implemented Status PartialCoverage quality flag will flag moments to show if the energy distribution is fully captured or not. Status CountStats will warn of inadequate counts for good statistics, or excessive counts risking sensor saturation. The last two flags are still in development (but a lower priority than calibration and dataset delivery tasks). NOTE: Grey shaded AIs were closed at the last PEACE progress meeting in February 2011

Status of Action Items MSSL CC8-AI-24 to PEACE (due: 31 Jan 2009): to investigate the EFW comparisons and to explain the particularly large deviations during the events on pages 25, 26, 28, 33, 34, 37, 42, 43, 45, 47 (see plots in document CrossCal8-Annex5-EFW) OPEN (no recent work) We have checked individual intervals for photo-electron contamination, which can give discrepancies observed by the EFW, in the PEACE data delivered to the CAA by comparing PEACE and WHISPER densities. We obtained excellent agreement between PEACE and WHISPER densities which means that there is no photo-electron contamination. PEACE Spectra were inspected using the same settings as used to calculate moments for CAA and there was no evidence of photoelectrons in the energy range used for the moments. Detailed examination of the data revealed a time aliasing effect between the two PEACE sensors, resulting in distorted moments. Many of the events highlighted by the EFW team show evidence of this time aliasing between the LEEA and HEEA sensors. Other cases have not been examined carefully yet, but not all can be explained by time aliasing. Investigation is in progress, some results were presented at the 9th Cross-Calibration meeting.

MSSL PEA08-AI-6 to PEACE (due: 15 Jan 2009): to describe in the user guide the usage of quality information about how to filter the measurements and show an example what happens if you do not do this. CLOSED The UG has been updated accordingly but further improvements are planned in a later release as more Status flags are implemented. PEA10-AI-4 to PEACE (due: 04-03-2011): to present a schedule for the delivery of missing datasets and files (2001-2009) IN PROGRESS Most of datasets for which our production codes are working have been delivered. Remaining datasets (PADMAR, 3DXPA, 3DXPALAR) will be delivered within a couple of weeks. PEA10-AI-7 to PEACE (due: 29-04-2011): to update the UG caveat part : show illustrations of caveats on large positive sc potential driven by EDI, WHISPER sounding, photoelectrons from EFW probes, low/high count statistics, data stream bit-flips. OPEN In progress: we are working on updating the UG. PEA10-AI-9 to PEACE (due: 29-04-2011): to add an example of partial coverage of the electron energies in the UG; the partial coverage status variable will be added later OPEN In progress: we are working on updating the UG. Status of Action Items

MSSL PEA10-AI-12 to PEACE (due 29-04-2011) To update the UG and ICD OPEN In progress: we are working on updating the UG and ICD. CC12-AI-11 to PEACE (due 30-10-2010): to process datasets for C3-HEEA. For the bad (broken) anode use interpolation. OPEN Resource limited Status of Action Items

MSSL Operational Review 5 Recommendations R13 to CAA/ALL: Users with specific interests may wish to access only a portion of the information available in user guides. The board recommends that both CAA and instrument teams consider developing user guides with a fast browsing capabilities. OPEN There has been no work done (is CAA going to take a lead on defining how to do this?) R14 to all teams: Continue Xcal and report in CR. OPEN The PEACE team carry on cross-cal activities with the WHISPER, WBD and EFW teams. R15 OR5-R15 to ALL: All key data production activities must be completed by summer 2011. All data from 2009 should be ingested by September 2010. IN PROGRESS We have produced key datasets (MOMENTS, PITCH_SPIN and 3DR) and most of other datasets for 2008 (calibrations v6.0) and 2009 (calibrations v5.9). In parallel we are working on v6.1 calibrations for 2005 – 2009. R16 to all teams: the board recommends delivery of observations from the commissioning stage particularly from January 2001 and December 2000 (also November 2000). OPEN Need data from other instruments: EFW PP (currently available from Jan 2001 – need data for Nov – Dec 2000 to make MOMENTS), FGM cal files (available from Aug 2000 - good). Will there be WHI sheath densities from those few JSOC controlled orbits in 2000 when there were operations on all the payload together and sheath crossings? Will the interference campaign orbit data be included?

MSSL Operational Review 5 Recommendations R23 to PEACE: PEACE team to complete production of all data sets through 2009 by September 2010, and finish calibration tasks and dataset production by Summer 2011. R24 to PEACE: The PEACE pa distributions from spring 2001 suffer from reduced pa coverage due to a problem with on-board handling of FGM data. This problem and similar issues should be stated in the UG. OPEN In progress R25 to PEACE: PEACE team to ensure that the best calibrations are applied to all data sets as soon as possible. IN PROGRESS We have produced alpha-factors from the end of 2004 up to end of 2008 based on comparison of PEACE- WHISPER densities. We are working to extend inter-anode calibrations up to end of 2009 using alpha- factors from the PEACE-WHISPER comparison studies. See earlier notes on calibration delivery status.
