9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 1/17 CAA Graphics: Pre-generated/On-demand Panels and Cross-Calibration Figures

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 2/17 Pre-Generated Panels: Old GUI

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 3/17 Pre-Generated Panels: New GUI New GUI was completed last weekend Few minor changes/updates need to be made:  Only 8 or less panels can be selected at one time  Listing must show instrument name  Tick boxes are not aligned with top line  Dataset titles continue to 2 nd line

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 4/17 Pre-Generated Panels: Future GUI changes  Many new panels will soon be added  Although users are guided to use ground-calculated moments, sometimes the users may wish to see PP moments because of their higher time resolution  Because lists become long, they must be grouped  Only few of them are pre-generated, the others are avilable only via on- demand option; this is indicated with *

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 5/17 Pre-Generated Panels: New Panels

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 6/17  Some plasma and field parameters are measured by more than one instrument  Using the datasets and files ingested on the CAA database, a variety of data comparisons will be performed  New comparisons need to be produced whenever new files are ingested  These comparisons are for the quality/product assurance: o difference can be explained by the fact that two measurements are different, e.g., CIS cannot measure the presence of low-energy ions in tenuous plasmas where spacecraft potential is very positive o Difference is caused by non-trivial matter, such as in the magnetosheath CIS-HIA can observe higher densities than what other experiments (e.g. Whisper) do  The end results of this activity are o to improve the calibrations of the instrument and so improve the quality of the datasets o to add better information in the caveats so that users can better interpret the observations and use them correctly Cross-Calibration Plots

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 7/17 GUI for Cross-Calibration Plots

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 8/17 FGM: PP vs CAA products Solar wind magnetotail Difference of azimuthal angle Difference of Polar angle Difference of magnitude (nT) Difference of magnitude (%)

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 9/17 Magnetic Field Variation within 4 sec

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 10/17 Example: DC Electric Fields  EDI and EFW E-fields are compared  Hourly intervals  In inertial frame  ISR2 coordinate system  Data are filtered with quality so that only highest qualities are shown EDI: best quality (first byte of STATUS variable) EFW: qualities = 3-4 (TBC)  Panels from top to bottom are  Three E-field components from EDI and EFW, plotted with their original time variable  Three E-field differences so that EFW data are interpolated to EDI time stamps. The median differences are displayed  EFW spacecraft potential is shown as reference

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 11/17 Example: DC Electric Fields, 1 Looks good!

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 12/17 Example: DC Electric Fields, 2 EDI spikes, EFW offset variation?

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 13/17 Example: DC Electric Fields, 3 Are these data really of highest quality?

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 14/17 Density Comparison: CIS, PEACE, WHISPER  Different density measurements are compared  Hourly intervals  Whisper densities, both passive and active  CIS (HIA and CODIF) PP  PEACE PP  Updates needed Whisper active and passive are not yet separated Ground moments should be used and perhaps PP data are displayed with another colour only highest qualities should be shown where quality info available  Panels from top to bottom are  Four measured densities, plotted with their original time variable  Density difference between PEACE and Whisper, in %  Density difference between HIA/CODIF and Whisper, in %  Density difference between HIA/CODIF and PEACE, in %  EFW spacecraft potential is shown as reference

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 15/17 Density Comparison: CIS, PEACE, WHISPER, 1 Looks great!

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 16/17 Density Comparison: CIS, PEACE, WHISPER, 2 Whisper? ions?

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 17/17 Density Comparison: CIS, PEACE, WHISPER, 3 Plasma sheet looks great! No whisper data?

9 th CAA Cross-Calibration Workshop, Jesus College, Cambridge, UK, 25-27 March 2009 18/17 Density Comparison: CIS, PEACE, WHISPER, 4
