5 Fisheries Section  Established in 1972  Objectives:  To encourage the rearing of fish in private ponds, rivers, dams and lakes so as to develop an additional source of protein in the population and to increase income.  To promote the rearing of fish by providing services to farmers in the construction of fishponds, the stocking of ponds and extension advice on the rearing of fish

6 Fisheries goal To increase fish production and consumption at both household and national level so as to address the issues of food and nutritional security and poverty alleviation. 7 Fish and fisheries resources  5 major rivers  Has 53 indigenous fish species and 7 exotic  Dams: range in size from a few large ones such as Maguga dam with a capacity of 332 Mm 3 through many medium sized reservoirs of 6 – 70 Mm 3 to a larger number of small reservoirs less than 6Mm 3.
