1 Friday 10 th October 2008 Why did the Germans hate the Treaty of Versailles? Objective: To understand why the Germans were angered by the Treaty of Versailles To be able to answer an 8 mark exam question effectively Key word: Treaty : a formal agreement between countries in reference to peace Starter Activity: 1.Speed dating! 2.Write down what you can remember. 3.Have you missed anything out?

2 Speed dating Britain, France and America forced Germany’s new government to sign the Treaty of Versailles in June 1919. Germany did not expect to get a harsh treaty because the new government was democratically elected and could not be blamed for the war. The British Prime Minister wanted a fair treaty but the British public wanted revenge. The French wanted to crush Germany and get compensation. The American President Wilson believed a harsh treaty would lead to Germany seeking revenge later on.

Explain your answer.   Germany had to pay £6,600 million, called reparations, for the damage done during the war. Germany forbidden to have submarines or an air force. She could have a navy of only 6 battleships. Germany lost land in Europe Germany could only have an army of 100,000 men. Germany’s colonies were given to Britain and France. Germany was split in two so that the newly created Poland could have access to the sea. Alsace-Lorraine given back to France. Germany could never unite with Austria Demilitarised the Rhineland - Germany was not allowed to place any troops in the Rhineland, the strip of land, 50 miles wide, next to France. War Guilt: Germany had to accept the blame for starting the war. Germany could not join the League of Nations.

5 Glossary Alsace and Lorraine – an area of France that Germany took control of after the war with France in 1871. Armaments- Military forces such as army, navy, air force Colonies – Countries under the control of Germany. Demilitarised zone – No German soldiers allowed in this area. League of Nations – The forerunner to the United Nations. Created to encourage co-operation and to end war. Reparations – compensation Treaty – An signed agreement between countries

In groups complete the Diamond 9 exercise. a) Rank the terms of the treaty in order of most/least upsetting and be ready to justify your decision. b) How do you think the Germans will react to the treaty?
