9 Alien and Sedition Acts Gave the President the power to arrest and deport citizens of other countries living in the US Sedition Act - Anyone who wrote, published or said anything bad about the government could be put in jail

10 Virginia and the Kentucky resolutions Jefferson and Madison did most of the writing they believed the sedition act violated free speech states could make laws null and void

11 Election of 1800 Adams had little support with the Federalist 1. after XYZ Adams will send a second diplomatic mission to France this will cool tension between France and the US. Peace with the US and France 2. Loss the aggressive federalist (wanted war) 3.alien and Sedition acts

14 Election of 1800 Jefferson and Burr get 73 votes each Adams gets 65 votes Pickney 64 votes The House of Representatives had to chose the winner –Federalist controlled the house of Reps –Hamilton swings the vote to Jefferson

15 Election of 1800 Jefferson becomes are 3rd president Peaceful transfer of power from one political party to another

16 Jefferson Administration Reversed much of what the Federalist did reduced the amount of taxes paid by the Americans Cut the size of the federal bureaucracy slashed the army to 3000 men

17 Jefferson and the courts The Judiciary acts –set up 3 circuit courts and 13 district courts all courts will be under supreme court –the supreme court will settle differences between state and federal law –before Adams left office he passed the Judiciary act of 1801

18 Judiciary act of 1801 Decreased the number of supreme court judges and increased the number of federal judges midnight judges John Marshall chief justice

19 Marbury Vs Madison Established Judicial review allows the courts to say if a law is unconstitutional allows the federal courts to review state laws and state court decisions

20 Jefferson’s programs in the west The land act of 1800 the government sold land on credit Napoleon and the French –gains control of the mouth of the Mississippi –he starts to charge large sums of money to use it –Jefferson sends James Monroe and Robert Livingston to Paris to buy this section of land for 10 million

21 Louisiana Purchase Napoleon offered Monroe and Livingston all the land the French owned in North America for 15 million Monroe and Livingston had no permission to buy this land but they take the deal

22 Louisiana Purchase Jefferson was not sure if the constitution would allow him to buy the land He will tell congress that they should buy the land

23 Lewis and Clark Meriwether Lewis and William Clark will be sent to explore the land –1. Find a river route to the western ocean –2. Make contact with the native Americans –3. What natural resources does the area have –Sacajawea will guide them on this exploration –Zebulon Pike also explored this land

24 Election of 1804 Jefferson was extremely popular –he lowered taxes –he acquired vast new lands –he got rid of the Alien and sediton acts –he keep the peace –The federalist are going to fiercely oppose the Louisiana purchase

25 Election of 1804 Federalist main support comes from the industrial north east Jefferson defeated Pinckney 162- 14

26 Hamilton Vs Burr Burr will split with the Jeffersonian and became a Federalist after he was Vice President Burr will run for governor of New York as a Federalist Hamilton will oppose this Burr does not win

27 Hamilton Vs Burr Burr challenged Hamilton to a duel they meet in Northern New Jersey on July 11, 1804 Burr killed Hamilton Burr must flee New York his career is over He will be tried for treason

28 Increasing tensions with Europe The Chesapeake is attacked by the Leopard (British ship) 21 men will be killed Embargo of 1807 –cut off all foreign trade –this did not hurt the french or england –it did hurt Americans ( New England states) –jefferson will use the navy to enforce the law

29 Election of 1808 James Madison will win ( he is a Jeffersonian)
