Reflection, Reflective Writing & PebblePad Neil Currant, lecturer in PDP

Learning Objectives To be aware of different approaches to reflection & reflective writing and how you can apply it. To become familiar with how to start reflecting.

Possible definitions of reflection An activity in which people “recapture their experience, think about it, mull it over and evaluate it” (Boud, Keogh and Walker 1985:19) Reflection ON action, i.e. thinking about past events. E.g. What did you learn yesterday.

Reflective writing “We can learn from our own and each other’s mistakes and successes...and come to terms with our own problem areas.” Without writing it down we often “do not tell ourselves the things at our cutting edge of difficulty” (Bolton 2005:23)

Reflection link: Psychomotor CognitiveAffective reflection Psychomotor = skills, practical, e.g. learning to ride a bike Affective = emotion, behaviour, e.g. Learning to change an attitude Cognitive = thinking, theory, e.g. Learning a new concept Reflection = combination of affective & cognitive
