TRADITIONAL GAMES

THIEVES AND POLICEMEN (tag and chase) COUNTRY: Greece MATERIALS / SPACE NEEDED: open space NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 8-10

THIEVES AND POLICEMEN (tag and chase) The children are divided in two groups: the “thieves” and the “policemen”. The “policemen” are chasing the “thieves” trying to touch them. Whoever is touched goes to “jail”. The other “thieves” try to touch the prisoners to free them, so they can become “thieves” again. There are variations to the game, for example the “thieves” hide and the “policemen” look for them.

THE STRONGEST TEAM WINS (tug game)

At this game there are two equal teams, holding an end of a rope each. They are positioned on either side of a line drawn on the ground, indicating the “space” of each team. They both pull as hard as they can. The aim is to pull so hard that one of the teams enters the space of the other team. The team which pulls the other into their space is the winner.

DODGE BALL

COUNTRY: Greece MATERIALS: a light ball SPACE: open space, neighbourhood NUMBER OF PLAYERS: 10-12

DODGE BALL The players are divided into two equal teams. We draw two lines at 10-15 metres one from the other, depending on the age of the players. The players of one team are positioned at the lines (shooters), while the other team stands in the middle of the space looking towards the group with the ball (defenders). The shooters try to hit the defenders. Whoever is hit is out of the game.

DODGE BALL However, if a defender catches and holds the ball before it hits the ground, earns a life and uses it if the ball touches him/her. For a player to go out, they must run out of lives. If the last remaining defender is not hit in 10 rounds, the whole team re-enters the game and his/her team earns a point. If all defenders are hit, the shooters win a point and the teams switch places.
