Identifying, Understanding and Combating Gender Bias Gender Bias is something we're all guilty of. It's typically unconscious and often stems from long held misperceptions about women & job responsibilities. Today we'll learn about the origins of some of these biases and how to identify gender bias when we see it.
5
This session is about developing positive solutions to a problem that often goes undiscussed. No, really We'll discuss some strategies for how both men and women can combat this at work & in our every day lives. Okay, they’ll be some complaining too. And I’m not sorry.
6
What is Gender Bias? Simply put, it’s an unfair difference in the way men and women are perceived. Bias is defined as any tendency which prevents unprejudiced consideration of a question or behavior. Gender bias occurs because individuals’ stereotypes and prejudices about gender become implicitly, unknowingly, but systematically implemented into every day life
7
So why does it matter?
8
Gender Bias in Hiring 1999 Study Steinpreis, Anders & Ritzke Identical resumes were sent out except gender specific names: Karen Miller vs Brian Miller Both men & women chose to hire the male candidates. 79% chose male name, 49% chose female name “We would have to see her job talk.’’ “It is impossible to make such a judgement without teaching evaluations.” “I would need to see evidence that she had gotten the grants and publications on her own.” “We would have to see her job talk.’’ “It is impossible to make such a judgement without teaching evaluations.” “I would need to see evidence that she had gotten the grants and publications on her own.”
9
Think that’s an old study? 2012 Proceedings of the National Academy of Science Both male & female faculty members rated the female candidate worse. The female was described as less competent, less hirable & offered a lower salary. The female candidate was often recommended a lower salary… up to 40% lower
10
The percentage of women working in major tech companies is remarkably consistent at 30%. Amazon 37% Facebook 31% Google 30% Apple 30% Microsoft 29% Twitter 30% Why 30% It's almost like water seeks its own level… This is the level where the majority feels comfortable. I would say its unconscious. -- Virginia Clarke, executive recruiter At 30 percent, there's an extremely high chance you'll see at least one woman in every meeting. That might be enough to gloss over the lack of diversity. -- Scott Page, Prof. Complex Systems & Economics at the University of Michigan
12
In the 70s & 80s, women made up only 5% or orchestra musicians Solution? Introduce a blind screening process. Put a screen between the audience & musician Increased women making it past preliminary audition by 50%
13
Yeah, this is what it feels like
14
Solutions Ask HR or hiring managers to present nameless resumes Educate hiring managers on how bias works Hold hiring managers accountable Emphasize objective, measurable, and relevant qualifications over "cultural" or male associated personality traits. Call out specific skills that women are socialized to be comfortable with associating with themselves: collaborative working style, interpersonal skills, time management.
15
What is Gender Inequality? Gender inequality refers to unequal treatment or perceptions of individuals based on their gender. It arises from differences in socially constructed gender roles.
16
Gender & Compensation
17
The wage gap is real… The wage gap is expressed as a percentage (e.g., in 2013, women earned 78.3% as much as men aged 16 and over) and is calculated by dividing the median annual earnings for women by the median annual earnings for men. The gap is even larger for minority women, only 64 cents on the dollar
18
So we’ve made some progress

Wage Gap by Profession ProfessionPay Gap Nurses91% Lawyers87% Software Developers 81% Janitors79% Financial Manager71% Retail Sales64%
20
So what can we do about it? Raise the minimum wage Raise the minimum tipped wage Support pay transparency Pass pay sick pay legislation (40% no sick pay) Paid family & medical leave Help women become better negotiators
21
What is Sexism? The belief that one sex (usually the male) is naturally superior to the other and should dominate most important areas of political, economic, and social life. Sexism is both discrimination based on gender and the attitudes, stereotypes, and the cultural elements that promote this discrimination.
22
Not So Subtle Sexism So, Gavin McInnes is a professional troll
23
Subtle Sexist Ideas In other words… Man Up! Ask a woman when she’s getting married or having kids Describe behavior as unladylike An unequal balance of labor during marriage Being uncomfortable with “switched” gender roles Being expected to do work that isn’t related to your actual job (order food, take notes, etc.) Women are interrupted 3 times as frequently as their male counterparts Calling women emotional or bitches for doing what men do Is the greatest insult to a boy being called a part of the female anatomy? How about saying you do something like a girl?
25
And it starts young…
26
Girl topics: mean girls, babysitting, telling a boy you like him Boy topics: making a rocket, how to make lightning, practical jokes Girls: I hate my thighs Boys: I’m Super

A elementary classroom experiment on Gender Bias... The first graders started brainstorming a list of words that spontaneously come to mind when they think of “girls” and “boys”. Then they disregarded the lists and asked the students to raise a hand if one of these words applied to them, as we read words from BOTH the girls’ and boys’ lists. Girls comfortably raised their hands for words like “soccer,” “powerful,” “hard challenges,” and “Karate”; and boys raised their hands for words like “feelings,” “ponies,” and “peaceful.”
