2 Mission/Vision Statement: MNPS Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools will provide every student with the foundation of knowledge, skills and character necessary to excel in higher education, work and life.

7 AP/Cambridge Capstone Pilot Background CB realized that students need research skills. Students want a diploma or credential. In fall 2012, a Capstone Pilot was begun in 15 schools: USA, Hong Kong, Canada Goals Disciplined and scholarly research Critical, questioning approach Self-reflection and independent thought

9 How does an IB School become authorized? Investigate IB philosophy and potential fit for school. Visit other IB schools and train administrators/teachers. Prepare 2 written applications. Upload applications. Host on-site IB committee appointed by Bethesda, MD. Wait for authorization letter from Director General, Jeff Beard, housed in The Hague. Receive official approval to implement the IB.

AVID Critical-reading strategies pushed throughout contracted sites Writing-to-learn strategies used to improve communication Ongoing: 100% of the teachers at each AVID site use AVID strategies. Ongoing: 100% of the students at each AVID site use AVID reading and writing strategies in all their classes.

Annually: Additional AP teachers apply to become summer readers for the CB. Encore Differentiated instruction used to measure growth and personalize learning Research-based, culturally responsive curricula sought--that also provide Common Core alignment Year 1: Coordinator and teachers develop a scope and sequence. Annually: Curriculum experts conduct evaluation of program components and their effects on student outcomes.

Ongoing: Cambridge teachers use the extensive online resources from Cambridge International Exams (CIE). AVID Collaborative student groups formed for work on projects College-age tutors trained to help students discover answers Ongoing: Train student leaders in AVID and cross-curricular classes. Annually: Seek college/university students who can commit to school service and the tutorology concepts.

Years 2,3: Train coordinators and teachers at new Cambridge middle schools. Year 3: Train AICE (11 th /12 th ) teachers at approved high schools.

Ongoing: 100% of students who score 3+ on AP exams are reimbursed for their test fees. Encore Equal access to Encore screening process Differentiated pre- and post-performance-based assessments Annually: Provide whole-grade screening at least once per grade- level cluster (K-2, 3-5, 6-8). Ongoing: Teachers administer assessments consistently, maintaining a bank of student exemplars.

27 Student Assessment for IB and AVID International Baccalaureate Internal assessments (IAs) required by the IB, marked by the teacher, and moderated by IB assessors External assessments (international exams) administered in May and scored on a scale of 1-7 Annually: Teachers apply IB mark schemes to student work. Annually: Schools use the Inquiry Upon Results to analyze implementation. AVID Increased growth and achievement by AVID students in core classes Expanded leadership and scholarship opportunities because of refined skills and increased confidence levels Annually: Schools evaluate the impact of AVID on student college and career readiness. Ongoing: AVID schools foster an environment in which all individuals collaborate as learners.

Annually: Document AVID student involvement in advanced coursework.

Annually: Recruit middle-school students from under-represented groups. Encore Administration of pre- assessments to gain baseline data Use of data to drive service delivery: e.g., BET Monitoring of student progress to adjust instruction/assessment Annually: Encore teachers, general education teachers, data coaches, and instructional coaches analyze student data. Ongoing: Curriculum is compacted and accelerated as needed.

Years 2,3: IGCSE students choose their AICE courses. International Baccalaureate Close guidance of students through choice and completion of the Internal Assessments (IA) Scrutiny of Inquiry Upon Results to determine gaps Annually: The IB reports consistently high correlation between IB classroom teacher marks and the IB moderation marks. Ongoing: Discussion of student progress takes place at every academy team meeting.
