History of the Conflict and Affects on People/Place/Space Learning intention: to understand the various elements behind the Israel- Palestine Conflict and how they have affected people in the area.

2 History Post-WWII Britain proposed a Jewish state in the Middle East (their traditional homeland) after widespread Jewish persecution (had been occurring since long before WWII). Israel Partition Plan- 1947 Proposed creation of both Jewish and Arab states from the Middle Eastern British Protectorate Jewish people supported plan and Arabs did not, kicking off war lasting till today.

3 History – Part II 1947 - Civil War 1948 – First Arab-Israeli War
1967 – Six-Day War 1973 – Yom Kippur War 1982 – Invasion of Lebanon 1987 – First Intifada 2000 – Second Intifada Consistent violence within Israeli state.

4 External Involvement USA is a key ally of Israel and supplies them with arms and aid money. USA also has been key to brining sides together to talk peace. Why? USA has largest Jewish population in the world (larger than Israel).

5 Changing International Borders
During times of “hot” war, the borders of Israel have often expanded, but have shrunk again when war is “cold” and peace talks/treaties are established.

6 Change of Domestic Borders Over Time
Because of internal and external conflict over time, the Palestinian people have lost land that was originally allocated to them in partition plan.

7 Affect on People A great deal of damage, destruction and death has been caused by the various wars. Economy, especially in Palestinian areas has been heavily affected. Many Palestinians have become displaced from their traditional homes/homeland. Often living in refugee camps for a lifetime. Many Palestinians have to live under very restrictive rules. Many on both sides live in fear of their lives. Many lose family members, both civilian and fighters. Many stuck with Us vs. Them mentality. Fighting/violence in the streets on a daily basis. Random cross border rocket fire into Israeli areas. Mandatory military service for Israeli citizens.

8 Physical Barriers/Changes
The building of a wall to separate the peoples. The ultimate definition of changing interactions between peoples and places/spaces.
