1 Romania – is the only Latin country in Central-Eastern Europe

2 Romania is located in South- East Central Europe, north of the Balkan Peninsula, on the Lower Danube, within and outside the Carpathian arch, bordering on the Black Sea.

3 County: Buzău Area: 81,3 km 2 Population(2002): 134,227 Buzău is the county seat of Buzău County, Romania, in the historical region of Wallachia. Buzău - Coat of arms

4 The first documentary attestation of Buzau is from 372, April 12, in a Papal Document. The town is an old settlement, dating from the Stone Age. The Monteoru Culture, from the Bronze Age, can be considered the development nucleus of this culture in the whole Europe. In Cârlomanesti – Niscov,they are discovered a former Dacian Fortress. The economical wealth of this region had determined the building, in the 4th century, of a Camp of the Eastern Roman Empire. Also due to the economical wealth Buzau became in 1500 the center of the Bishopric from this region. The Bishopric Center became a cultural center because of the printing house, singers’ school, icon painters’ school, seminars etc. Having a strategic position Buzau was also a defense center against the Turks, tartars and others. The fortresses from Bradu and Berca are proofs of the local resistance.

11 An important page of history in this county is the Pietroasa treasury (approx. 19 kg of gold), the most famous in Romania, was discovered in 1837 in the ruins of a Roman castrum. The Monteoru Culture, from the Bronze Age, can be considered the development nucleus of this culture in the whole Europe. In Cârlomanesti – Niscov, in the place of a former Dacian Fortress, many statues, of an important artistic value, have been discovered, between them remarkable is: "The Dacian wolf with wild boar fangs", representing the Dacian Totem. 12 Since 1924, the muddy volcanos of Berca have been declared monuments of nature and represent one of the most interesting geological and botanical reserves in Romania. They also represent one of the rarest phenomena in the world.

13 On the Slanic Valley, near by Lopatari, there is other impressive phenomenon at 700 m above sea level: the so-called alive fire". In fact there are blue flames which burn in the deep cracks of soil..
