Who is this? This is Paul Stephenson. Born in Essex. Served in the RAF. Went to University in Birmingham. Moved to Bristol and became a civil rights campaigner (Britain’s Rosa Parks).

Discrimination in Bristol  In the 1960s, it was impossible for a Black or Asian person to get a job working on a Bristol Bus.  The Bristol Bus Company refused to admit that this was the case.

Paul Stephenson (Britain’s Rosa Parks?)  Paul Stephenson proved that the Bus Company discriminated against coloured people.

The Bristol Bus Boycott, 1963  Stephenson and his supporters organised a bus boycott.

The Boycott succeeds  On the 28 th August 1963, the Bristol Bus Company lifted it ban on coloured workers.  On 17 th September, Raghbir Singh became Bristol's first non white bus conductor.

Discrimination against blacks and Asians is banned  In 1968 the British Government passed the Race Relations Act making it illegal to discriminate against someone because of their colour.  The same year as America.

Black History Month 2009  We have to be aware of our ‘hidden’ history.  Why do we teach about discrimination in America in the 1960s but not in this country?  We should be celebrating the achievements of people like Paul Stephenson and making sure we challenge any forms of discrimination in this country.
