1 © Crown copyright Met Office The OPREC component of COPE (Orographic Precipitation Experiment) Jeremy Price, Met Office Research Unit, Cardington, Beds. Jeremy.price@metoffice.gov.uk

2 © Crown copyright Met Office Overview of OPREC To study orographic enhancement of precipitation over a large hill. OPREC will run from April 2013 to Mar 2014 Located over Bodmin Moor Collaborate closely with COPE Network of raingauges running 24/7 Additional IOPs run for interesting periods.

3 © Crown copyright Met Office IOPs and science aim OPREC aims will help measure precip during COPE and give insight to orographic enhancement of convective events. OPREC also aims to measure orographic enhancement of rain during frontal passages and study e.g. seeder-feeder effect IOPs will last 2-3 days and include Cardington mobile radiosonde and LIDAR van (Halo Doppler) Placement of van normally upwind.

4 © Crown copyright Met Office OPREC raingauge network 13 small weather stations will be deployed Linear arrangement ‘upwind’ of, across Bodmin, and ‘downwind’ of Bodmin Approximately 20 miles long Oriented WSW to ENE – approximately aligned to the prevailing wind Based on HOBO data loggers Tipping bucket rain gauge, Temperature, Humidity (RH) at all sites Some sites have additional wind speed and direction (cup and vane) and pressure measurements
