Multicultural Education

What I have Learned Cont. The experience of moving to an unfamiliar place can bring unexpected challenges and obstacles. Once in the U.S., the entire family may feel isolated as they navigate life in a new country, often with limited financial resources and institutional supports (Shields and Berhman, 2004).

What I have Learned Cont. The educator’s role in this situation is to accommodate these students and make them feel like an integral part of the classroom. The educator has to build relationships with and establish successful and effective communication and partnerships with parents. It really takes a village to raise a child.

What I have learned The United States has become a melting pot, where all cultures exist. People are now migrating from their native homes to seek a better life.

What is Multicultural Education Based on my learning experiences from this class, Multicultural Education is creating equitable and just learning environments for all people in a learning community.

Multicultural Education The Educators Responsibility to the Students The educator is responsible for delivering the curriculum and being conscious of all cultural norms of diverse people.

Practices I Now Use in the Classroom Focus on critical thinking and asking critical questions Pay strong attention to inequity in classroom and processes Attending to sociopolitical relationships Acknowledging student knowledge through problem-posing, dialogue, and general student- centeredness Using authentic assessment techniques

Conclusion After taking this course, I am more understanding to all the needs of my students providing an equitable learning environment.
