Couponing 101 with Sharon and Kyle Metzger

 Save money on groceries and other household items  Stockpile items when they are on sale instead of buying them when you run out  A chance to be generous with what you have! Why Coupon??

Time Commitment  Consider couponing a hobby or part-time job  Start small. Commit 30 minutes a week to start.  Choose one store or category of items to start with and then branch out

Don’t Get Crazy  Savings aren’t savings when you are buying things you won’t use and can’t give away  Go generic if it is still cheaper after coupons  Monitor the actual amount you spend, not the amount you save

Types of Coupons  Manufacture Coupons  IP coupons (Internet printed)  Store coupons  Web-based coupons (loaded onto a card)  Catalina coupons  “Blinkies” and tear pads

Resources  Hip2save.com  Mommysnack.net  Couponmom.com  Moneysavingmom.com  Afullcup.com

Where to find coupons  Sunday Newspaper  Magazines  Printables  Coupon mailers  Inside or on product packaging  Catalina coupons (printed at the register)  Web-base coupons (Kroger or Owens)

Online Sources for Coupons  Coupons.com  Redplum.com  Smartsource.com  Pillsbury.com  Various manufacture websites

Organizing your Coupons  Envelopes  Expandable organizer  Coupon box  Coupon binder

Tips for using a binder  Purging  Expiration dates in order  Organized by category  Utilize blogs to figure out organization techniques

Tips and Hints  Combine coupons and sales  Stock up when you find a great deal, but watch expiration dates  DO NOT photocopy a coupon. This is fraud.  Buying in bulk doesn’t always mean savings. Try to buy smaller sizes and get them for FREE!

Tips and Hints  “Stack” coupons when possible  Watch for BOGO sales  Let someone else do the work for you. Utilize blogs!  Let go of brand loyalty  Get rain checks where possible  Keep a price book

Tips and Hints  Don’t be a coupon snob  Have patients with yourself. Learning takes time  Don’t beat yourself up if you miss a deal

Kroger/Owens  Sales run Thursday- Wednesday  Huntington Owens double’s manufacture coupons (not store coupons) up to $.50.  Watch for “Mega Events” (i.e. buy 10 items get $5 off or 10 for $10)  Utilize catalina coupons  Load coupons onto card to automatically be used. Can only use either web-based or paper. Not both

CVS  Ad runs Sunday-Saturday  Scan your card at the in-store kiosk to receive store coupons.  Stack store and manufacture coupons (one of each per item)  Look for “$ off of a purchase of $” coupons (i.e. $5 off your purchase of $25)  ECBs (Extra Care Bucks) print off with your receipt and can be used like cash at check out.  Present coupons in this order: $ off $, manufacture and store coupons, ECBs
