3. Inventor Information In 1827 the first real photograph was developed by French inventor, Joseph Nicephone Niepce. The first electronic camera was patented by Texas Instruments in 1972. But it wasn’t until 1981 that Sony introduced the first commercial electronic camera called the Mavica.

4. Identify the Problem The first idea of creating an image was on a wall by passing light through a small hole. This was created in Ancient Greece. The first time the problem was identified by NASA, they needed to send images from the object up in space back to Earth.

5. Brainstorm and Design In 1969 Willard Boyle and George E. Smith invented the charged-coupled device (CCD). They jointly received the Franklin’s Institute Stuart Ballantine Medal. Sasson’s invention started with an assignment from his boss at Eastman Kodak, G. Lloyd in 1975. He thought of ways to improve other companies designs of the “digital camera” He was said to draw on whatever was available. He tested an 8 lb. Toaster size machine, he asked a co- worker to pose for him, the black and white image was captured at a resolution of.01 megapixels, it took 23 seconds to record on a digital cassette tape and another 23 seconds to appear on a TV. “You could see the silhouette of her hair, but her face was a blur of static.” -Sasson In 1978 Sasson and Lloyd were given a patent on their digital camera.

6. Build, Test, Evaluate & Re-Design Sony re-designed the digital camera and made it in to a commercial digital camera, the Mavica. The images were then stored on a mini disc and then put into a video reader, and then displayed onto a TV or printed. The Mavica wasn’t a true digital camera, it was actually a modified video camera that took still images. The first digital camera to work with your home computer was introduced in 1994 by Apple.
