Chapter 10, Section 3 The Characteristics of Seed Plants

What is a Seed Plant? Table Talk: Can you name some plants that have seeds? They share 2 important characteristics Seed plants outnumber seedless plants 10 to 1 Some examples: sunflowers, daisies, beans, peas, squash, cotton, oak, pine, maple, apples, oranges 1.They have vascular tissue (roots, stems, leaves) 2.They use pollen and seeds to reproduce

In seed plants, the plants that you see are the sporophytes. The gametophytes are microscopic! Did you know?

Two types of vascular tissue Xylem (ZY-lum), where water and minerals travel (“xylem up”) Phloem (FLOH um), the tissue that transports food (“phloem down”) Table Talk: In this microscopic view of plant vascular tissue, where is the xylem? The phloem? Both stems and roots contain xylem and phloem.

Pollen & Seeds Seedless plants need water in their surroundings in order for the sperm to swim to the egg (like in mosses) On the other hand, seed plants produce pollen to deliver sperm cells near the eggs Table talk: How else is pollen spread besides bees?

Pollen = tiny structures that contain the cells that will later become sperm cells Seeds develop after sperm cells fertilize the eggs A seed is a structure that contains a young plant (embryo) inside a protective covering

Seed dispersal After seeds have formed, they are dispersed or scattered by: Animal droppings Wind Transported on clothing or fur Water Forceful ejection

Germination When a seed embryo begins to grow and pushes out of the seed http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTZih16DUB4 (Mung bean seeds sprouting) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTZih16DUB4 Table talk: Why would a seed that is dispersed far from its parent survive better? Answer: there is less competition for resources with the parent plant. See BrainPop “Seed Plants” End
