HIGH SCHOOL MATH FOR 8 TH GRADE WELCOME

AGENDA  PURPOSE OF THIS MEETING  Strictly to share and obtain feedback  No decisions will be made tonight  COURSE OFFERINGS – HIGH SCHOOL FLOW  HIGH SCHOOL DISCUSSION  PROPOSAL

COURSE PROGRESSIONS – HIGH SCHOOL FLOW 8 TH GRADE – MATH 8 OR ADV MATH 8 9 TH GRADE – Algebra 1 10 th GRADE – Geometry 11 th GRADE – Algebra 2 12 th GRADE - Calculus 8 TH GRADE – Algebra 1 (6 units – 1 year above grade level) 9 TH GRADE – Geometry 10 th GRADE – Algebra 2 11 th GRADE – Calculus 12 th GRADE – Stats or Multivariable Calculus 8 th GRADE: Algebra 1/Geometry A (9/10 units – 1.5 years above grade level) 9 th GRADE: Geometry B/Algebra 2(9/10) 10 th Calculus 11 th Stats/Multivariable Calculus 12 th Stats/Multivariable Calculus

While the accelerated/hyper-accelerated courses allow the students to progress into the next course at least a year earlier – these courses ARE NOT honors or Advanced Placement (AP) and do not offer students additional quality points on their GPA. The course grade received for the high school math courses in middle school does not show on the student’s transcript. The EOC grade will appear, but there will be a P(pass) or F (fail) next to the course name.

Advantages & Disadvantages Advantages  Can easily progress to higher level of math (i.e Multi Variable Calculus – DL with Tech) – however this is doable even without being in these courses Disadvantages  Speed of courses – block scheduling, - some of surrounding HS are asking that we not offer the hyper- accelerated course  Lack of extra quality points – honors -.5 and AP 1.0 – this affects valedictorian, HOPE and college admittance

The things to think about….. Pros CONS  Ability to earn 2 HS math credits in ms  Could possibly have 6 math credits on transcript  Ability to “slow-down” the Algebra/Geom A course  Will not have to wait to take EOC in high school due to block scheduling in HS  Ability to use problem based learning frequently without having to worry about “getting” through the curriculum  Students would go directly to Honors Algebra II – again slowing this course down  Early arrival to LMS – 8:00 am  Transportation – if one part of block is before school  MS school student “sitting” in a class for 90 minutes – though it would not be 90 minutes at one time. PROPOSAL FOR NEXT YEAR – Block for MS (GSE Algebra 1 (Fall) and GSE Geometry (Spring):

 The big take away is: Your child can be afforded the opportunity to earn 2 HS Math credits IF you are willing to commit to the zero period (Student arriving at 8:00am) all year What are your thoughts???
