6.1 Taxonomy Domain Kingdom Reproduction Autotroph & Heterotroph

Taxonomy Video https://youtu.be/kKwOlAqQoLk

Taxonomy The classification of all living things based on their characteristics.

LEVELS OF CLASSIFICATION Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Do Kids Pick Candy Over Fancy Green Salads?

Domain Broadest level of classification of all living things. Primary difference is the places they can live 3 Domains 1.Bacteria 2.Eukayota 3.Archaea

Kingdom In taxonomy, a group of similar phyla or divisions. Large and very general category in taxonomy.

The Six Kingdoms Plants Animals Protists Fungi Archae Bacteria How are organism placed into their kingdoms?  Cell type, complex or simple  Their ability to make food  The number of cells in their body

Plants You are probably quite familiar with the members of this kingdom as it contains all the plants that you have come to know - flowering plants, mosses, and ferns. Plants are all multicellular and consist of complex cells. flowering plants In addition plants are autotrophs, organisms that make their own food. With over 250,000 species, the plant kingdom is the second largest kingdom. Plant species range from the tiny green mosses to giant trees.giant trees. Without plants, life on Earth would not exist! Plants feed almost all the heterotrophs (organisms that eat other organisms) on Earth. Wow!

Archaea/Archae: Became a domain in 1990 Appeared prokaryotic & considered bacteria and named "archaebacteria“ biochemical characteristics and DNA showed they should be a different domain Life's Extremists Unique metabolisms allow them to live: in oxygen-free habitats boiling sulfuric acid pools near volcanoes sulfur hot springs glacial ice desert sands polluted waters toxic waste dumps

Asexual & Sexual Reproduction https://youtu.be/jk2RJm5RBEk

Asexual Reproduction Production of offspring from only one parent organism. – Bacteria, cell reproduction.

Sexual Reproduction Production of offspring from the combination of genetic material from two parent organisms. – Sperm fertilizing eggs; plants (seeds) and animals.

Autotroph & Heterotroph

Autotroph An organism that makes its own food. Remember: you can’t spell Plant without an “A”

Heterotroph An organism that gets its food by eating other organisms. Remember: Human starts with “H”

Number of Cells Unicellular-an organism one cell big Multicellular-an organism made of many cells

How does the number of cells compare to the national debt?

Review Questions: 1.What is the broadest and most diverse level of classification of living things? 2. In what Domain will you find algae? Domain 3. What domain would you find an organism that can live in extremely hot, cold or chemically harsh conditions? Eukarya Archaea

Review Questions: 4. In what Kingdom will you find mushrooms? 5. Organisms that are eukaryotic, heterotrophic, and reproduce sexually are from what kingdom? Fungi 6. What kind of reproduction would it be if a new plants forms without sharing genetic information with any other plant? Animalia 7. What is the primary difference among organisms in the 3 domains? Asexual reproduction The places they can live

Review Questions: 8. An organism that can NOT make its own food is called? 9. What type of reproduction will a flowering plant like honeysuckle use? Heterotroph 10. What domain will you find a shark? Sexual Reproduction (pollen) Eukarya 11. A plant that gets energy it needs from the sun is a Autotropic OR Heterotropic Autotrophic
