Embedding Core Skills CP Progress City Lit

Activity 1: (5 min) We are required to embed (within our subject) skills that are needed for functioning in society. What skills are those?

What needs to be embedded? 1)Basic Skills Literacy Language Numeracy ICT 2) Study Skills 3) Employability Skills Time keeping/attendance Organisation Team work self-confidence self-esteem inter-personal and workplace communications Activity 2: Feed back and discussion (10 min)

What is embedding? Opportunistic teaching: Every teaching session is based on one or more of the core skills discussed. There is always an opportunity to make them relevant in the classroom.

Activity 3: Open discussion (10 min) Share an experience of embedding communication skills in your teaching. Asking the learner to follow a set of instructions independently, Encouraging the learner to respond to questions that will demonstrate an understanding of the task to be carried out. Asking the learner to speak to the group about a topic that they are familiar with for 2 minutes. Asking learners to introduce themselves to the group, encouraging them to provide some simple personal information. Ask the group to each give one piece of information that they can remember from the introduction. Ref: Working on employability with learners with LDD http://www.excellencegateway.org.uk/node/1517

Student task: Matching exercise Mouse Points at the screen Keyboard It is used to type Printer It is used to print Screen It shows what you are doing on the computer. Final activity: How would you embed core skills for mile stone 4 to 6?

Background Information Towards Employability A new approach

Level 1-3 Occasionally our students are at this level At this level a learner is expected to read to obtain information from several written sources including newsletters, books, leaflets, written instructions. It requires writing structured paragraphs with linking words and correct grammar. Entry 1-3 Some of our students might be at this level At this level a learner is expected to read and write sentences to communicate ideas. Pre entry Milestone 7-8 Most of our students are at this level. At this level a learner is expected to use and read a wide range of words and numbers. Milestone 4-6 At this level a learner is expected to use and understand numbers and pictures Milestone 1-3 Some of our students can be at this level Responding, focusing and interacting. Structure of the Core curriculum

A new point of view: towards employability Ref: Working on employability with learners with LDD http://www.excellencegateway.org.uk/node/1517

The approach Literacy, communications and numeracy are important, underpinning skills for employability, citizenship and lifelong learning. When planning programmes for learners with learning difficulties and disabilities, it is useful to consider the employability or independent living goals of individual learners, and what related literacy and numeracy the learner might need. This approach not only provides a clear focus for the programme being developed and implemented, it also acknowledges that the learner is at the heart of the programme. Ref: Working on employability with learners with LDD http://www.excellencegateway.org.uk/node/1517

The method: embedding Opportunities to improve communication and numeracy skills present themselves in every aspect of learner activity, e.g. during lunch break in the café, learners can practise handling money and communicating with others. Practitioners need to consider all the different learning environments where such opportunities can occur, e.g. the training session, the workplace if the adult is in supported employment or the community in which the adult lives. 12 Why embedding core skills? Literacy, numeracy, ICT and study skills are the essential foundation for all learning and for effective performance in all aspects of life. Core skills support the learner’s independence and self-direction.

What is embedded learning? Subject Skills & Knowledge Embedded learning & teacher Core Skills Numeracy Literacy Language ICT Study Skills What minimal core skills the students need to learn your subject effectively? Approaches to the teaching of core skills Direct teaching of core skills Teaching at the same time as the main subject skills Focusing on core skills as part of the classroom tasks, feedback and general activities.

In way ways can we embed learning? Starter activities Motivate students who arrive on time Model productive learning behaviour Prepare students for the teaching session Help to integrate students who arrive late Examples Games numeracy (time, dates and seasons), language (story telling activity, newsround), literacy games (phonics, vocabulary, word recognition/spelling)

In way ways can we embed learning? Self-assessment activities Encourage students to self-reflect supporting self-direction. Examples Evaluate own work/learning or quality of teaching Group discussions (Language and vocabulary) Worksheets (writing (dates,, words sentences, ticking, signing) and reading pictures, signs words, sentences, instructions) Quizzes

In way ways can we embed learning? Whole group activities Examples Debates Discussions Planning Evaluation of session Role plays
