OVERVIEW Central for Disease Control Polio Disease Ebola Disease Malaria Disease Zika Virus Measles Q&A Session

CENTRAL FOR DISEASE CONTROL PART 1 * First created as a post-WWII agency to deal with malaria * Expanded with the help of self-funding and working alongside private organizations * Has launched over 800 programs all over the world to attempt and stabilize public health * First created as a post-WWII agency to deal with malaria * Expanded with the help of self-funding and working alongside private organizations * Has launched over 800 programs all over the world to attempt and stabilize public health

CENTRAL FOR DISEASE CONTROL PART 2 * Work 24/7 to fight diseases before they reach the boarder of the United States * Not only try to cure existing diseases, but also confront new diseases and try to stop them from spreading * They go to a lot of rural places in foreign countries to find diseases, learn about them, and stop them

POLIO DISEASE PART 1 * First diagnosed in 1789 by British Dr. Michael Underwood, with it spreading in the US in 1916 causing the epidemic * Polio disease attacks the nerve cells & sometimes along with the central nervous system >>This could cause the body to become paralyzed or even death * In 1955, Dr. Jonas Salk created the first vaccine to prevent Polio disease

POLIO DISEASE PART 2 * Polio can come about either via transmitted through others or widely (from bugs) * Out of the 127 countries in 1988 which declared a polio outbreak, only Afghanistan & Pakistan still have the epidemic * With no non-wild polio cases yet reordered as of April 2016, and with a 99% decreasing rate, there is a good chance that polio could be completely gone by 2018 if this trend continues

EBOLA The Ebola virus is a deadly virus that causes a severe fever in humans and other mammals. Symptoms include: Fever Severe headache Muscle pain Weakness Fatigue Diarrhea Vomiting Abdominal pain Unexplained hemorrhage (bleeding or bruising)

EBOLA the virus is spread through direct contact or body fluids Blood Urine Saliva Sweat Feces Vomit breast milk infected fruit bats or primates Sexual contact

MALARIA More than 198 million cases occurred in 2013 An estimated 600,000-800,000 people died of malaria in 2012 About 1,500 cases in the U.S. every year, which is mostly caused from travelers that were just in places where it is common It is spread by mosquitoes and was caused by a parasite It was a big problem in the U.S. until it was stopped by the CDC in the 1940s.

MALARIA Its caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium Five types of plasmodium infect humans P. falciparum: found in tropical and subtropical areas; major contributor to deaths from severe malaria P. vivax: found in Asia and Latin America; has a dormant stage that can cause relapses P. ovale: found in Africa and the Pacific islands P. malariae: worldwide; can cause a chronic infection P. knowlesi: found throughout Southeast Asia; can rapidly progress from an uncomplicated case to a severe malaria infection

ZIKA VIRUS The virus is spread through Miskito's Areas it is located include: Africa, South Asia, and The USA There is currently no vaccines toward the virus In rare cases the virus leads to other diseases

SYMPTOMS OF ZIKA Fever Rash Joint pain Red eyes Women that are pregnant can receive severe birth defects last for about a week

MEASLES VIRUS This virus is highly contagious and can be spread by air At this time there is no specific treatment Most common in Africa and Asia also found in America There are vaccines to try and prevent the virus

SYMPTOMS OF MEASLES Rash Phenomena Blindness Inflammation in the brain In many cases a result is death
