A domain is the highest level of taxonomic classification The three domains are Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya Bacteria and Archaea are also names of kingdoms The domain Eukarya contains the other 4 kingdoms of Protista, Fungi, Plantae and Animalia

Classification often skips the domain and starts with the kingdoms shown below: Archaea (also called archaebacteria) Bacteria (also called Monera or Eubacteria) Protista Fungi Plantae Animalia The 6 Kingdoms

Dichotomy---to divide in two A dichotomous key is commonly used by scientists to classify living organisms. At each step there are two alternatives offered, and the choice of one of those alternatives determines the next step.

Viruses are composed of a core of nucleic acid The Nucleic acid core is surrounded by a protein coat called a capsid The Nucleic core is either made up of DNA or RNA but never both

The kingdoms only include living organisms. Viruses do not possess all of the characteristics of living organisms: Viruses cannot reproduce without the aid of a host They do not take in nutrients or release waste products Examples of Viruses Aids, herpes, common cold and flu, chicken pox and SARS
