A Fictional Romance Novel By: Stephenie Meyer Presentation by Kristen Bengo

Synopsis Twilight by Stephenie Meyer is a book told through the eyes of young, 17 year-old Bella who had lived a normal life until she sends herself packing to Forks, Washington. The first day of school brought her new friends, classes, the feel of a completely different atmosphere and, more danger than she realized. It turns out there are vampires who reside in Forks and Bella’s life is put in danger when one of the Cullens (the Vampire clan) find the smell of her blood more appealing than other humans.

Synopsis (cont.) Even then, she can’t help but feel attracted to him. Edward and his “family” are beautiful, more beautiful than any human. They’re supposed to be for their “intended prey”. However, Edward and his family are different, they only feed on the blood of animals. This fact stopped Edward from killing her that first time he caught her scent, the first day of school. Yet, despite the danger he puts her in simply by being near her, he can’t stay away. It turns out the feelings are mutual. This book is about the improbable romance between human and vampire and the danger Bella puts herself in when she falls in love with one who, no matter how changed, still thirsts for her blood. Can they be together? Will Edward’s love for her be enough to stop from killing her?

Likes The perspective the book is told from gives it a feeling of innocence and oblivion, two characteristics Bella clearly puts forth as part of her personality in the way she misconstrues Edward’s behavior towards herself. What it does is it adds to the suspense and mystery of the novel. It keeps you asking questions because the only side you see is Bella’s. “Will Bella end up with Edward?” “Will their unusual relationship last?” “If not, will Bella live to cherish the memories she shared with him?” I really enjoy the way the author is very descriptive in the way she defines the Cullen family’s character and appearance. The way she describes the scene’s atmosphere and setting really puts the picture in the reader’s mind to get a better understanding of the circumstances of the situation. + +

Likes (cont.) The storyline in general is an attention- grabber. This book brings both the action and suspense readers crave, and the romance and conflict of the romance most females wish to read about. I like how Stephenie Meyer foreshadows what’s to come in the book and the books that follow it. She also sets up Edward’s character as mysterious, leaving it open to interpretation. All the characters included have personalities that intertwine perfectly making the plot and conflict of the story more interesting and desirable to read. + +

Recommendation To be honest, this book would appeal more to a female audience of the younger generation than to anyone else. However, many others have read this book who don’t fall under that category. To be honest, this book would appeal more to a female audience of the younger generation than to anyone else. Ideally, the book is a romance that, in most cases, attracts teenage girls, but this book has attracted people of all ages, genders, and races and not undeservingly. 8 Recommendation (cont.) I find that, though there are a couple of male Twilight fanatics, the clubs, websites, and other gatherings of information about the book are mainly female- based and for a reason.
