We will continue our work using counting, place value and the four operations; addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. It is really important that children apply what they learn to problem solving and real life situations so we will be focussing on this. They also need to learn the relationship between addition and subtraction so will be using addition to check their subtractions, and when learning their tables will be expected to know the related division facts. We continue to secure and broaden their ability to apply what they know. Fractions, money, weight, time, measures and data will also be covered again this term. We will be asking for support in revising number bonds to 10/ 20 off by heart, doubles and halves to 10, counting to 100 and back and counting in tens from any number forwards and backwards. Year 1 are making sure they use compound sentences and Year 2 are trying to use both compound and complex sentences. We also try to use a variety of statements, questions, exclamations and commands in our writing. When we start our sea topic we will study the Lighthouse Keeper Stories by Ronda and David Armitage before planning, composing and writing our own adventures. The Children will try to vary the way that they start their sentences and add detail using adjectives, strong verbs and adverbs. We continue to foster our love of poetry with a unit of sea poems and some traditional poems which will help us add to our repertoire- Yes we will be asking for help here! We will also practice our letter writing as we write our end of year thank you letters. Reading, Grammar, Spelling, Handwriting and Phonics continue daily. When reading at home please could we ask that you focus on questioning your child about what they have read to help them with their comprehension skills, thank you. We will use the character of Mr Ben to help us. We will discuss how we can find out about clothes in the past, enjoy learning about some very strange fashions and understand some of the reasons that clothes have changed. Children may come home asking to look at old family photographs. Our Pirate Day at Chatham Dockyard will launch our sea topic. As pirates we will need to have a good knowledge of the Kent coastline, identifying ports, harbours and river estuaries. We will also want to avoid being shipwrecked so learning about lighthouses could be essential. Knowing how and where the coast is guarded might help us be successful pirates. We will also think how different the scene on British beaches would have looked through our telescopes 100 years ago. Finally we will want to feel the sand between our toes!
