1 Student Email The Do’s and Don’ts of Email in Liberty Public Schools

2 Reasons To Have Student Email Required part of the Tech. Curriculum Teach students professional and educational uses for email Allow students to interview experts within the school day Work with students and teachers Peer edit Literature discussion Group problem solving

4 Reasons for Student Email Students quickly communicate with authors and other experts Students communicate with peers about group projects and presentations Teachers communicate with students: –Grade reports –Classroom newsletters –Makeup work –Test reminders –Paper edits –Other

5 Protecting Students and Teachers District email accounts will not be private. Teachers and district administrators have the right to monitor all school email accounts. The content and use of email must always follow all school rules. Breaking school rules with email will include consequences such as: –Loss of computer privileges –Alternative assignments –Detention –ISS –OSS

6 How will parents know that we are using district email? Parents will receive a letter explaining how and why district email is being used. Parents will receive an explanation of the consequences of inappropriate use of email. Parents will be notified of any examples of district email misuse by their child.

7 Liberty Public School Email is NOT: A timely way to contact your family or have them contact you during the day A way to forward “e-junk” including chain letters, urban myths, free offers, jokes, etc. A way to register on unapproved websites. (This could bring “Spam” email into the district email)

8 Discussion Questions: 1.What are appropriate uses of email? 2.Why shouldn’t parents use email as a way to leave important messages for their child?

9 Student Email Addresses Student’s email address will be made up of the following: username@student.liberty.k12.mo.us Example: jsmith@student.liberty.k12.mo.usjsmith@student.liberty.k12.mo.us Students in grades 5 – 7 will be able to access district email from 7:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

10 “Netiquette” of Email Communication on district email should: 1. Use standard English instead of the short cuts and abbreviations used in I.M and text messaging. 2. Use standard spelling. 3. Follow rules of grammar for punctuation, capitalization and sentence structure.

11 When will we be able to start using district email? Student email addresses will be activated on September 5, 2006. Teachers may begin to require email assignments, projects and tasks beginning on this date. Remember, inappropriate use will result in not only disciplinary action but also alternative assignments that do not involve the use of computers.
