1 Uses and Structures of Haloalkanes David Martin City and Islington College Students Name: …………………………………………………………………..

2 Topic Organic – The uses of halo-alkanes Aims  This is a cut out exercise – students to match the images, descriptions, formula and name.  This exercise is normally used before covering the topic of halo-alkanes, so the students have an awareness of the uses of the compounds that they are studying and they are all chemist made. Level Level 3 Method Slide 3- How to us the activity, Slide 4, 5,6 & 7 need to be cut up and given to the students. Slides 9, 10, 11 and 12 are the answer slides. Equipment  Laptop & Projector  Hand-out  Pens Duration 5-10 Minutes

3 Match How to use this activity This is normally used with students before they start the topic of halo-alkanes. Cut up all the images, formulas and words and get the students to match them in groups that go together – an image, formula, use, name, trade name. After the students have had a go at matching everything together we go through the answers. Real world connections can be made about the uses made of these materials and those that have been banned and why. It allows students to make connections between organic chemistry and the real world
