17 Kindergarten Readiness

18 KANSAS STATE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION | www.ksde.org Kindergarten Readiness Advisory Group comprised of people from the Children’s Cabinet & Trust Fund, KSDE, DCF/Head Start, GOSOSY and Kindergarten educators has been meeting regularly since January. Anticipate a fall 2016 roll out of a developmental screening tool to a group of pilot schools. State-wide roll out planned for fall of 2017. The screener will collect information on language and literacy, cognition and general knowledge (including math and science concepts), approaches to learning, physical well- being and motor development and social-emotional development. Families and caregivers will be engaged in gathering information about their child's development and early childhood experience prior to Kindergarten. The screener is easy and quick to administer. The tool being considered has a high degree of inter-rater reliability and validity, is appropriate for use with any developmentally appropriate practice and is culturally and linguistically appropriate.

A new cohort of Comprehensive Support and Improvement schools will be identified using ‘15 and ‘16 API data and other measures in August/September of 2016 to participate with KLN for three years. The other measures will be decided by the ESEA Advisory KLN subcommittee which represents all districts that currently have Priority schools. Data will be rerun using ‘15, ‘16 and ‘17 data to CS & I identification and KLN participation. KLN has hired a team of full time coaches dedicated solely to the support of KLN districts and schools. Needs assessment work begins Fall of 2016.
